2008–09 KNVB Cup
The 2008–09 KNVB Cup was the 91st edition of the Dutch national football annual knockout tournament for the KNVB Cup. 88 teams contested starting on 30 August 2008 and ending on 17 May 2009. Feyenoord unsuccessfully defended its 2008 title losing in the fourth round stage in January 2009 to Heerenveen, 0–3, in Rotterdam. Heerenveen would successfully pursue its 2009 title on 17 May 2009 defeated Twente, 2–2 ( aet), in De Kuip stadium, Rotterdam. 45,000 attended. This Cup marked the third time in its history the absence of the Big Three teams from the quarter-finals onward of the tournament last occurring 27 years. The Vierde Divisie (; "Fourth Division"), formerly known as Hoofdklasse () is the second-highest league of amateur football in the Netherlands, and the fifth tier in general. Background The league was divided into two sections: Saturday and Sunday. This was a result of the traditional pillarisation (), the segregation of Dutch society. The ''Saturday'' clubs are mainly Protestant Christian clubs, who were not allowed to play on Sunday. The ''Sunday'' clubs were in general Catholic and working class clubs, whose players had to work on Saturday and therefore could only play on Sunday. IJsselmeervogels () is a Dutch amateur football club. With seven national amateur titles, IJsselmeervogels is one of the most successful amateur clubs in the Netherlands. VV Katwijk also has seven national amateur titles. The Reds, as they are nicknamed, come from Bunschoten – Spakenburg, in the Dutch province of Utrecht, on the shores of the former IJsselmeer lake. Rijnsburgse Boys is a football club based in Rijnsburg, Netherlands. The team compete in the Tweede Divisie, the third level of the Dutch football league system. Achilles '29 is a football club from Groesbeek, Netherlands, competing in the seventh-tier Tweede Klasse. The club is known for its successes in the Dutch domestic cup, having knocked FC Volendam, Heracles Almelo, RKC Waalwijk, Telstar and MVV Maastricht out of the KNVB Cup. Penalty Shootout (association Football)
In association football, a penalty shoot-out (previously known as kicks from the penalty mark) is a tie-breaking method to determine which team is awarded victory in a match that cannot end in a draw, when the score is tied after the normal time as well as extra time (if used) has expired. For example, in a FIFA World Cup, penalties are used in elimination matches; the round of 32, the round of 16, the quarter-finals, the semi-finals, and the final. In a penalty shoot-out, each team takes turns shooting at goal from the penalty mark, with the goal defended only by the opposing team's goalkeeper. Each team has five shots which must be taken by different players; the team that makes more successful kicks is declared the victor. Shoot-outs finish as soon as one team has an insurmountable lead. Quick Boys (Katwijkse Voetbal Vereniging Quick Boys) is an amateur football club from Katwijk aan Zee, Netherlands. The club, established on 1 February 1920, is the second most successful amateur football club in the Netherlands, behind IJsselmeervogels.
