2008–09 CEV Challenge Cup
The 2008–09 CEV Challenge Cup was the 29th edition of the European Challenge Cup volleyball club tournament, the former CEV Cup. The Turkish club Arkas İzmir beat Polish club Jastrzębski Węgiel in the final and achieved its first CEV Challenge Cup trophy. CEV Challenge Cup
The CEV Challenge Cup is the third tier official competition for men's volleyball clubs from the whole of Europe. The competition started in the 1980–81 season under the name CEV Cup. Volleyball
Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since Tokyo 1964. Beach volleyball was introduced to the program at the Atlanta 1996 Summer Olympics. The adapted version of volleyball at the Summer Paralympic Games is sitting volleyball. Arkas Spor
Arkas Spor is a professional volleyball team based in İzmir, Turkey. It plays in the Turkish Men's Volleyball League and in the CEV Champions League. The Körfez Sports Club began competing in the 2nd volleyball league in the 1999-00 season. In 2001 it became the Saint Joseph Sports Club and in 2003 it was renamed Arkas Saint Joseph. The club's name was changed to Arkas Sports Club at the Board of Directors meeting in May 2005. The club's primary sports branch is volleyball, but it is also active in sailing and bridge. Arkas Sports Club is a young club that aims to increase the number of sports branches in which it participates every year. Karşıyaka Arena
Karşıyaka Arena (also known as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk Karşıyaka Sport Hall) is a multi-purpose indoor arena in İzmir, Turkey. It was opened in 2005. It is owned and run by Karşıyaka SK. The 6,500 seating capacity arena is used mostly to host basketball and volleyball games, as well as concerts and events. A single-elimination knockout, or sudden-death tournament is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of a match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament. Paul Duerden
Paul Charles Duerden (born October 22, 1974) is a Canadian former professional volleyball player. He played for the Canada men's national volleyball team between 1993 and 2008, representing Canada at the 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2006 FIVB World Championships. Career Club Duerden played professionally in Europe from 1996 to 2010, playing for clubs in Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, and Turkey. He won the 2008–09 GM Capital Challenge Cup playing with Arkas Spor Izmir and was awarded "Most Valuable Player".
