2008 East–West Shrine Game
The 2008 East–West Shrine Game was the 83rd staging of the all-star college football exhibition game featuring NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision players. The game featured over 100 players from the 2007 college football season, and prospects for the 2008 draft of the professional National Football League (NFL). In the week prior to the game, scouts from all 32 NFL teams attended. The proceeds from the East–West Shrine Game benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children. The game was played on January 19, 2008, at 6 p.m. CT at Robertson Stadium on the campus of the University of Houston, and was televised by ESPN2. The offensive MVP was Josh Johnson ( QB, San Diego), while the defensive MVP was Spencer Larsen ( LB, Arizona). The Pat Tillman Award was presented to Justin Tryon ( DB, Arizona State); the award "is presented to a player who best exemplifies character, intelligence, sportsmanship and service". Robertson Stadium
John O'Quinn Field at Corbin J. Robertson Stadium (often referred to as simply Robertson Stadium) was a multi-purpose stadium in Houston, located on the campus of the University of Houston. It was the home of the Houston Cougars football and women's football (soccer), soccer teams. The stadium was the first home for the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer from 2006 to 2011, as well as the first home of the American Football League (1960-69), American Football League's Houston Oilers from 1960 to 1964. On January 1, 1961, it hosted the American Football League Championship Game (for the American Football League playoffs, 1960 title). The Oilers defeated the 1960 Los Angeles Chargers season, Los Angeles Chargers (24–16) to become the league's first champions. It was also the site for pro football's first ever double-overtime game on December 23, 1962. ''The Des Moines Register'' is the daily morning newspaper of Des Moines, Iowa, United States. History Early period The first newspaper in Des Moines was the ''Iowa Star''. In July 1849, Barlow Granger began the paper in an abandoned log cabin by the junction of the Des Moines and Raccoon River. In 1854, ''The Star'' became the ''Iowa Statesman'' which was also a Democratic paper. In 1857, ''The Statesman'' became the ''Iowa State Journal'', which published three times per week. In 1870, ''The Iowa State Journal'' became the ''Iowa State Leader'' as a Democratic newspaper, which competed with pro- Republican ''Iowa Daily State Register'' for the next 32 years. In 1902, George Roberts bought the ''Register'' and ''Leader'' and merged them into a morning newspaper. In 1903, Des Moines banker Gardner Cowles, Sr. purchased the ''Register and Leader''.
