2008 Angolan Legislative Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Angola on 5 and 6 September 2008, as announced by President José Eduardo dos Santos on 27 December 2007. They were the first since the 1992 general elections, which had led to the outbreak of the second phase of the Angolan Civil War, which continued until 2002. The results showed the ruling People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) winning 82% of the vote and 191 of 220 seats in the Parliament of Angola. The main opposition UNITA (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola) won 10%. The international response was mixed, with the European Commission, the United States and the Southern African Development Community praising the elections as generally fair, while Human Rights Watch has questioned the legitimacy of this result. 1992 Angolan General Election
General elections were held in Angola on 29 and 30 September 1992 to elect a President of Angola, President and National Assembly of Angola, National Assembly, the first time free and multi-party elections had been held in the country. They followed the signing of the Bicesse Accord on 31 May 1991 in an attempt to end the 17-year-long Angolan Civil War, civil war. Democratic Angola – Coalition (, also known as AD–Coligação) was an alliance of political parties in Angola. The leading force in AD–Coligação was the Front for Democracy (FpD). The president of the alliance was Evidor Quiela. The alliance was formed in 1992. In the 1992 parliamentary election AD–Coligação won one seat in the national assembly, with 0.86% of the national vote. The seat is held by João Vieira Lopes, from the FpD. The presidential candidate of AD–Coligação was Simão Cassete, who got 0,67% of the votes.
