2005 Palestinian Presidential Election
The 2005 Palestinian Presidential elections were held in the West Bank and Gaza Strip of the Palestinian National Authority on Sunday, 9 January 2005 to elect the President of the Palestinian Authority, President of the Palestinian National Authority, to succeed Yasser Arafat, who had died on 11 November 2004. The election was the first to be held since the 1996 Palestinian general election, 1996 general election, and voters elected Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Mahmoud Abbas for a four-year term. Seven candidates contested the election. Abbas won over 67% of the votes cast, independent candidate Mustafa Barghouti came second with 21%, and the remaining candidates were far behind. The election was boycotted by Hamas and Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine, Islamic Jihad. Hamas urged supporters to stay away, but did not try to disrupt the election. Mahmoud Abbas
Mahmoud Abbas (; born 15 November 1935), also known by the Kunya (Arabic), kunya Abu Mazen (, ), is a Palestinian politician who has been serving as the second president of Palestine and the President of the Palestinian National Authority, Palestinian National Authority (Palestinian National Authority, PNA) since 2005. Abd al-Sattar Tawfiq Qasim al-Khader (; 21 September 1948 – 1 February 2021) was a Palestinian writer, thinker, political analyst, and academic. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP; ) is a secular Palestinian Marxist–Leninist organization founded in 1967 by George Habash. Abelhaleem Hasan Abdelraziq Ashqar () is a Palestinian Muslim activist who was an assistant professor of business at Howard University. He was convicted of criminal contempt and obstruction of justice for refusal to testify before a grand jury in a trial related to the funding of Hamas by donors in the United States, and was sentenced in November 2007 to 135 months in prison.
