2005 Campeonato Brasileiro Série C
In 2005, the Campeonato Brasileiro Série C was composed of five rounds. In the first one, the 64 teams were divided in 16 groups of 4 teams each. Teams in each group played against each other in home and away games. The two best ranked teams of each group advanced to the second round, where they were paired 2-by-2 and played home and away games. The 32 teams played such rounds until there were just four teams left. The four eventual finalists were put in a single group, and played against each other in home and away games. América Futebol Clube (RN), América (RN) and Clube do Remo, Remo (PA) were promoted to the Série B, beating Esporte Clube Novo Hamburgo, Novo Hamburgo (RS) and Ipatinga Futebol Clube, Ipatinga (MG). Campeonato Brasileiro Série C
The Campeonato Brasileiro Série C, commonly known as the Série C or the Brazilian Série C to distinguish it from the Italian Serie C, is the third tier of the Brazilian football league system. Unlike the first and second divisions, the Série C is not played in a double round robin system, arguably because many participating teams lack the financial conditions to travel long distances. Thus, the tournament is organized in regional groups and the table prevents teams from distant states from playing each other in the initial rounds. Beginning in 2009, the Série C was reduced from 64 teams to 20 and the new Campeonato Brasileiro Série D is the qualifier for Brazilian league football. In its current format the first phase was then played in a single round, with 19 matches.
