2002 Manipur Legislative Assembly Election
Elections to the Manipur Legislative Assembly were held in February 2002, to elect members of the 60 constituencies in Manipur, India. The Indian National Congress won the most seats as well as the popular vote, and Okram Ibobi Singh was appointed as the Chief Minister of Manipur. The Indian National Congress didn't have a majority of seats on its own and joined the Secular Proggresive Front alliance, along with the Communist Party of India, the Nationalist Congress Party and the Manipur State Congress Party. After the passing of ''The Delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies Order, 1976'', the constituencies were set to the ones used in this election. The Manipur Legislative Assembly is the Unicameralism, unicameral legislature of the Indian States and union territories of India, state of Manipur. Description The seat of the Manipur Legislative Assembly is at Imphal, the capital of the state. It is housed in the Capital Complex in the Thangmeiband locality of Imphal city. The term of the Legislative Assembly is five years, unless dissolved earlier. The Manipur National Conference was a political party in the Indian state of Manipur. MNC was formed in 2002, when a split occurred in the Manipur State Congress Party. Two competing factions struggled to be recognized as the authentic MSCP. In the end the Election Commission recognized the Th. Chaoba-led group as the real MSCP. Democratic Revolutionary Peoples Party
The Democratic Revolutionary Peoples Party (DRPP) was a political party in the Indian state of Manipur. The party launched 23 candidates in the state assembly elections in 2002, out of whom two were elected - N. Biren Singh and Thokchom Meinya. In total, the party received 51,916 votes. Samata Party
The Samata Party (SAP) is a political party in India, initially formed in 1994 by George Fernandes and Nitish Kumar, is now being led by Uday Mandal as its National President. Samata Party once launched Nitish Kumar as the Chief Minister of Bihar. It was an offshoot of the Janata Dal, with the alleged casteism of the parent party being the reason given for the split. The party has socialist leanings; at one point, it wielded considerable political and social influence in North India, particularly in Bihar. Wahengbam Nipamacha Singh (17 December 1930 – 17 July 2012) was chief Minister of the northeastern India state of Manipur. Nipamacha Singh became chief minister replacing Rishang Keishing from the Congress in 1997. In 1997, he started the Manipur State Congress Party (MSCP) while he was the Speaker in the same year. Though he won the 2000 election for the second time, he was removed the very next year when President's rule was declared in the state. Saying, "It is a sin to be with a party that does not have any representation in Parliament. However powerful the party might be on home turf, it cannot raise Manipur’s problems in Parliament if it does not have any MP", he left the party.
