2001–02 FC Barcelona Season
FC Barcelona's 2001–02 season was the second under the presidency of Joan Gaspart and the single full season of management by Carles Rexach (who had replaced Lorenzo Serra Ferrer in the latter part of the previous campaign). The summer of 2001 saw long-serving team captain Josep Guardiola leave the club, while many transfer deals were concluded to give a new face to the squad with the signings of Roberto Bonano, Javier Saviola, Patrik Andersson, Francesco Coco, Geovanni, Philippe Christanval and Fábio Rochemback. This was also the final season at Barcelona of veteran players like Sergi Barjuán, Abelardo and the talismanic Rivaldo. Philippe Charles Lucien Christanval (born 31 August 1978) is a French former professional footballer who played as a centre-back. During his career, he played for Monaco, Barcelona, Marseille and Fulham and earned six full international caps with the France national team, as well as selection to the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Phillip John-William Cocu (born 29 October 1970) is a Dutch professional football manager and former midfielder who was most recently the manager of Vitesse. Cocu was born in Eindhoven but raised in Zevenaar, playing youth football for local clubs DCS and De Graafschap. After a year at AFC '34, he started his professional career at AZ.
