2000–2001 Vendée Globe
The 2000–2001 Vendée Globe is a non-stop solo round-the-world yacht race for IMOCA 50 and IMOCA 60 class yachts. This is the fourth edition of the race starting on 9 November 2000 from Les Sables-d'Olonne. Summary The departure originally planned for Sunday, November 5 but the decision was made to delay the postponed start till Thursday, 9 November 2000 a delay of 4 days due to bad weather. This race was the first major test of the new safety rules, introduced following the tragedies the previous races. Overall, it was a success; although some boats were again forced to retire from the race, none were lost. This race also featured the youngest entrant ever: Ellen MacArthur, who at 24 years old managed to put together a serious campaign with her custom-built boat ''Kingfisher''. Les Sables-d'Olonne
Les Sables-d'Olonne (; French meaning: "The Sands of Olonne"; Poitevin: ''Lés Sablles d'Oloune'') is a seaside resort and port on the Atlantic coast of western France. A subprefecture of the department of Vendée, Pays de la Loire, it has the administrative level of commune. On 1 January 2019, the municipalities of Olonne-sur-Mer, Château-d'Olonne and Les Sables-d'Olonne merged, retaining the latter name. Location and geography Les Sables-d'Olonne is a seaside town in western France, on the Atlantic Ocean. It is situated on the coast between La Rochelle and Saint-Nazaire, near the coastal terminus of the A87 that connects it and nearby communities to La Roche-sur-Yon, Cholet, and Angers to the northeast. Joé Seeten
Joé Seeten is a French sailor born on 31 May 1957 in Dunkirk. Biography He discovered sailing thanks to his father, who acquired his first boat in 1967. Joé has had a passion for sailing ever since. He trained as an electric technician. He set up his company, La Voilerie, where for seventeen years he designed and produced sails. At the same time he participates in numerous crew races (Tour de France à la voile, Quarter Tonner World Championship, Discovery Route, Trans-Atlantic Twostar) which allows him to evaluate and prove his sails. From 1989 to 1993 he sailing in Beneteau First Class 8 series finishing third in the French Championships and then in the European Championship where he finished third. The IMOCA 60 The IMOCA ("Open 60") is a 60ft (18.3 m) development class monohull sailing yacht governed by the International Monohull Open Class Association (IMOCA). The class pinnacle event are single or two person ocean races, such as the Route du Rhum an ... class yacht Sceta Calberson 4 was designed by Finot-Conq and launched in the 1994 after being built by JMV Industries based in Cherbourg, France. The hull and deck are made out of pre-impregnated T800H carbon fibre sandwich with a Nomex core. The bow region under the waterline is a single skin carbon composite. All of this has been cured at 120°C. The boat has central water ballast and is 2 tonnes lighter than previous generations. Bernard Gallay
Bernard Gallay (born 7 November 1959) is a French yachtsman and businessman. He has competed in the Vendée Globe twice (1992-1993 Vendee Globe, 1992/93 and 2000-2001 Vendee Globe, 2000/01) and finished his career as a professional sailor whilst participating in the Transat 6.50 in 2005. In 1994, he moved to Montpellier in the South of France and founded Bernard Gallay Yacht Brokerage. He still competes in amateur races such as Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez (previously known as La Nioulargue) and the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Biography Bernard Gallay was born in Paris.
