2000–01 S.L. Benfica Season
The 2000–01 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 97th season in existence, and the club's 67th consecutive season in the Primeira Liga. It ran from 1 July 2000 to 30 June 2001. Benfica competed domestically in the Primeira Liga and the Taça de Portugal. The club also participated in the UEFA Cup, by virtue of finishing third in that tournament the previous season. The season is the worst in Benfica's illustrious history since the start of the Primeira Liga during 1934–35. The club switched managers two times. Jupp Heynckes was replaced by José Mourinho in September. Toni, who previously guided the club to a league title, took the reins in December. In the transfer market, young players like Marchena and Fernando Meira were brought in, and mixed with the experience of 31 year-old, Pierre van Hooijdonk, who arrived to replace Nuno Gomes, were meant to improve the team competitiveness. João Vale E Azevedo
João António de Araújo Vale e Azevedo (born 17 May 1957) is a Portuguese former lawyer who was the 31st president of sports club S.L. Benfica. In relation to his three-year club presidency, he was convicted of embezzlement, document forgery, breach of trust, and money laundering. Presidency of Benfica On 31 October 1997, Vale e Azevedo was elected the 31st president of Portuguese sports club S.L. Benfica, succeeding Manuel Damásio. Vale e Azevedo won the club elections with 51.5% of 19,824 votes, defeating Luís Tadeu and Abílio Rodrigues. Soon after, he signed Graeme Souness as coach of the football team. ''Record'' is a Portuguese sports newspaper, founded in 1949 by Manuel Dias, published in Lisbon. Although it covers most sports, football is the focal point of it, and almost always is the only sport referred to on the cover. History and profile ''Record'' was founded by Manuel Dias. João Henrique Pataco Tomás (born 27 May 1975) is a Portuguese retired professional footballer who played as a forward. He represented mostly Braga (three seasons) and Rio Ave (four) during his 19-year senior career. Nuno Miguel Soares Pereira Ribeiro (born 5 July 1976), known as Nuno Gomes, is a Portuguese former professional footballer who played as a striker. Fernando José da Silva Freitas Meira (; born 5 June 1978) is a Portuguese former footballer who played mainly as a central defender. Carlos Marchena
Carlos Marchena López (; born 31 July 1979) is a Spanish retired footballer, and a manager. Mainly a central defender with an aggressive approach, he also played as a defensive midfielder. Most of his professional career (nine years) was spent at Valencia, where he helped the club to five major titles, including two La Liga championships. He amassed totals in that competition of 330 matches and 11 goals over 13 seasons, also playing for Sevilla, Villarreal and Deportivo.
