During the 2000–01 season, Middlesbrough F.C., Middlesbrough participated in the FA Premier League. Season summary Some early season relegation worries saw Middlesbrough F.C., Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson (businessman), Steve Gibson respond by installing former England boss Terry Venables as joint manager alongside Bryan Robson in December. This experiment with joint management paid off as Middlesbrough finished 14th to avoid the drop by a comfortable margin. Robson and Venables both departed after the season was over, and in came Manchester United F.C., Manchester United assistant Steve McClaren to manage the Teesside club. Steve Gibson (businessman)
Stephen Gibson (born 9 January 1958) is a British entrepreneur and the chairman and owner of Middlesbrough. In May 2024, he was 350th on the '' Sunday Times Rich List'', with a net worth of £640 million. He is the second richest person from North East England. Gibson was born in Middlesbrough and raised in the Park End area of the town. Raised Catholic, he attended local schools, St Pius X Primary and St Mary's College. Steve McClaren
Stephen McClaren (born 3 May 1961) is an English football coach and former player who is currently the manager of the Jamaica national team. McClaren began his coaching career with Oxford United, before joining Derby County in 1995. In 1999, McClaren was hired by Manchester United to be Brian Kidd's replacement as Alex Ferguson's assistant manager. He held that position for two years, until he was hired as manager of Middlesbrough. During his tenure, Middlesbrough won their first major trophy, the League Cup in 2004. They were also UEFA Cup runners-up in 2006. Steven Craig Watson (born 1 April 1974) is an English football manager and former professional player who is manager of club Darlington. As a player, he was a right-back or midfielder. He played in the Premier League and Football League for Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Everton, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield Wednesday. Brian Christopher Deane (born 7 February 1968) is an English football coach and former player. His most recent managerial position was as the manager of the Norwegian side Sarpsborg 08. During his playing career, he played as forward from 1985 until 2006. He was the scorer of the first ever goal in the FA Premier League in 1992, when he was a Sheffield United player. Deane also played in the Premier League for Leeds United and Middlesbrough as well as playing top-flight football in Portugal and Australia for Benfica and Perth Glory respectively. Mark Summerbell (born 30 October 1976) is an English football midfielder. He has played for Middlesbrough, Cork City, Bristol City, Portsmouth and Carlisle United. Summerbell was born in Durham and played county football for Chester-le-Street at under-15 level.
