The 2000–01 Los Angeles Kings season was the Kings' 34th season in the National Hockey League. The club made it to the playoffs, defeating Detroit in the first round before losing to Colorado in the second round. This was LA's first playoff series win since defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1993 Campbell Conference Finals. Western Conference (NHL)
The Western Conference () is one of two conferences in the National Hockey League (NHL) used to divide teams. Its counterpart is the Eastern Conference (NHL), Eastern Conference. History Originally named the Clarence Campbell Conference (or Campbell Conference for short), it was created in 1974–75 NHL season, 1974 when the NHL realigned its teams into two conferences and four divisions. Because the new conferences and divisions had little to do with North American geography, geographical references were removed. The conferences and divisions were re-aligned in 1981–82 NHL season, 1981 to better reflect the geographical locations of the teams, but the existing names were retained with the Campbell Conference becoming the conference for the NHL's westernmost teams. The names of conferences and divisions were changed in 1993–94 NHL season, 1993 to reflect their geographic locations. The Detroit Red Wings (colloquially referred to as the Wings) are a professional ice hockey team based in Detroit. The 2000–01 Phoenix Coyotes season was their fifth season in the National Hockey League, the franchise's 22nd season in the NHL and 29th overall. Before the season began, Wayne Gretzky became a part owner. The Coyotes failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 1995 when they were known as the Winnipeg Jets. Phoenix Coyotes
The Arizona Coyotes are an inactive professional ice hockey team based in the Phoenix metropolitan area. They competed in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Central Division (NHL), Central Division (1996–1998, 2021–2024) and the Pacific Division (NHL), Pacific Division (1998–2020) in the Western Conference (NHL), Western Conference, and the West Division (NHL), West Division (2020–2021). 2000–01 Boston Bruins Season
The 2000–01 Boston Bruins season was the club's 78th season of operation in the National Hockey League (NHL). The team finished ninth in the Eastern Conference that year, failing to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs for the second consecutive year, which was also the first time the team missed out on the playoffs in consecutive years since the 1960s. It was also the first full season the Bruins were without longtime team captain Ray Bourque since the 1979–80 season, who would win the Stanley Cup as a member of the Colorado Avalanche at season's end and subsequently retire from the NHL. The Bruins tied the Carolina Hurricanes in points for the regular season at 88. 2000–01 Columbus Blue Jackets Season
The 2000–01 Columbus Blue Jackets season was the Blue Jackets' first season in the National Hockey League (NHL) after the city of Columbus, Ohio, was awarded an expansion team in 1997. The Blue Jackets finished 13th in the Conference and fifth in the Division. Thus, they were unable to qualify for the 2001 Stanley Cup playoffs. Off-season The team would be named the Blue Jackets, as it was chosen to celebrate "patriotism, pride and the rich Civil War history in the state of Ohio and the city of Columbus". The Jackets would join the Central Division in the Western Conference. The club would name Doug MacLean as general manager.
