The 1998 United States elections were held on November 3, 1998 in the middle of Democratic Party (United States), Democratic President Bill Clinton's second term. Though Republican Party (United States), Republicans retained control of both chambers of United States Congress, Congress, the elections were unusual because this is the first midterm since 1934 United States elections, 1934 that the president's party gained seats in the United States House of Representatives, House of Representatives. Several United States Senate, Senate seats changed hands, but neither party made a net gain. In the House of Representatives, Democrats picked up five seats, marking the first time since the 1934 United States elections, 1934 elections in which the incumbent president's party did not suffer losses in either house of congress. Midterm elections in the United States are the Elections in the United States, general elections that are held near the midpoint of a President of the United States, president's four-year term of office, on Election Day (United States), Election Day on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Federal offices that are up for election during the midterms include all 435 seats in the United States House of Representatives, and 33 or 34 of the 100 seats in the United States Senate.
