1993 Slovak Presidential Election
The 1993 Slovak presidential elections were held between 26 January and 15 February 1993. Michal Kováč was elected as the first president of Slovakia and became the only Slovak president elected by Parliament. A candidate needed to receive 90 votes to be elected. Michal Kováč
Michal Kováč (3 August 1930 – 5 October 2016) was the first president of Slovakia, having served from 1993 through 1998. Early life Kováč was born in the village of Ľubiša in then Czechoslovakia in 1930. He graduated from the present-day University of Economics in Bratislava and was a bank employee of the Státní banka československá and of other banks. As such, he spent some years in London and in Cuba in the 1960s. During the Normalization (Czechoslovakia), Normalization he was subject to some persecution. Political career During and after the Velvet Revolution, from 12 December 1989 to 17 May 1991 (when he resigned) Kováč was the Finance Minister of the Slovak Socialist Republic, Slovak (Socialist) Republic. Christian Democratic Movement
The Christian Democratic Movement ( sk, Kresťanskodemokratické hnutie, KDH) is a Christian-democratic political party in Slovakia that is a member of the European People's Party (EPP) and an observer of the Centrist Democrat International. History The party was established in 1990. In the 1990s it was led by Ján Čarnogurský and then since 2000 by Pavol Hrušovský. Before the 2016 elections, it was led by Ján Figeľ. Following the defeat in the elections, Figeľ stepped down from the position and Pavol Zajac became temporary leader until the decisive party meeting on 19 March 2016. Figeľ endorsed Milan Majerský, mayor of Levoča, for the position. The KDH was a member of the government coalition, but it left that coalition on 7 February 2006 due to disputes over an international treaty between Slovakia and the Holy See dealing with the Conscientious objection on religious grounds. Slovak National Party
The Slovak National Party ( sk, Slovenská národná strana, SNS) is a nationalist political party in Slovakia. The party characterizes itself as a nationalist party based on both social and the European Christian values. Since 1990 SNS has won seats in every Slovak parliament but three (in 2002, 2012 and 2020) and has been part of the government from 2006 to 2010. Anton Neuwirth
Anton Neuwirth (1921–2004) was a Slovak medical doctor, political prisoner, Member of Parliament, Presidential candidate and ambassador. Early life, education and family Neuwirth was born on 22 January 1921 in Chalmová, Bystričany. He grew up in Kapušany, Žilina and Bojnice. From 1939 to 1944 he studied medicine at the Comenius University (Univerzita Komenského) in Bratislava graduating as a medical doctor in 1946. During his studies he became involved with the Croatian priest, Professor Tomislav Kolakovič (1906–1992). This experience framed his social and political engagement against totalitarianism and that the church should have social issues as its priority. From 1945 to 1947 he studied chemistry at the Comenius University (Univerzita Komenského) in Bratislava. The president of the Slovak Republic ( sk, Prezident Slovenskej republiky) is the head of state of Slovakia and the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces. The president is directly elected by the people for five years, and can be elected for a maximum of two consecutive terms. The presidency is largely a ceremonial office, but the president does exercise certain limited powers with absolute discretion. The president's official residence is the Grassalkovich Palace in Bratislava. History of the office The office was established by the constitution of Slovakia on 1 January 1993 when Slovakia permanently split from Czechoslovakia and became independent. Milan Ftáčnik
Milan Ftáčnik (30 October 1956 – 13 May 2021) was a Slovak politician, Minister of Education of the Slovak Republic from 1998 to 2002 and Mayor of Bratislava from 2010 to 2014.
