1987 Australian Football Championships
The 1987 Australian Football Championships was an Australian rules football series between representative teams of the three major football states. Games involving Victoria were played under State of Origin rules, whilst the match between Western Australia and South Australia involved players based in their respective states at the time. The competition was won by South Australia. Australian Football
Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. There are rules on how the ball can be handled; for example, players running with the ball must intermittently bounce or touch it on the ground. Throwing the ball is not allowed, and players must not get caught holding the ball. Andrew Jarman
Andrew Newton Jarman (born 14 January 1966) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL), and the North Adelaide Football Club and Norwood Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). He is the older brother of Adelaide legend Darren Jarman and has won the Magarey Medal twice. Career SANFL Jarman made his debut with in 1983 at 17 years of age, and quickly established himself as an elite player with superb skills especially when disposing by handball. Andrew Rogers (footballer)
Andrew Rogers (born 15 August 1964) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon and Geelong in the VFL/AFL. Originally from South Australian National Football League (SANFL) club Woodville, Rogers was recruited by Essendon with pick six in the 1987 VFL Draft. He had played 63 games at Woodville from his debut in 1985 and in 1987 represented South Australia in interstate matches against Victoria and Western Australia, performing well enough to be selected in the All-Australian team. Rogers made eight senior appearances for Essendon in 1988 but after being unable to cement his place in the side crossed to Geelong. He was at Geelong for four seasons, playing finals football, including the 1992 AFL Grand Final which they lost and was to be his last game in the league. John Platten
John Patrick Platten (born 17 March 1963) is a retired Australian rules footballer. Platten's career began in the SANFL, where he won a Magarey Medal with Central District, and also with Hawthorn, where he played in four premierships as well as winning the 1987 Brownlow Medal. Platten remains a popular and respected figure at both clubs, and is also an inductee in both the AFL and SANFL Halls of Fame. Platten also competed in the Gladiator Team Sports Challenge in 1995. Career Platten was born in South Australia. He began (and ended) his career with Central Districts in the SANFL: a junior with Centrals, he commenced in the junior ranks in 1979 and made his league debut in 1981. Tony McGuinness (footballer)
Anthony McGuinness (born 6 May 1964 in Adelaide, South Australia) is a former Australian rules football player who played for Footscray and in the VFL/AFL. His wife is former ''Nine News'' Adelaide presenter Georgina McGuinness. SANFL career McGuinness proved his skills early in his career with leading SANFL club Glenelg, winning the Magarey Medal in 1982 at the age of 18. A dynamic and pacy left-footed rover, he featured strongly in Glenelg's 1985 premiership victory against North Adelaide, kicking 2 goals. Bruce Lindner
Bruce Norman Lindner (born 20 June 1961) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Geelong Football Club and Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He is the nephew of legendary footballer Don Lindner. SANFL career Blessed with high marking and strong hands, as well as having no trouble kicking the ball 50 metres on the fly even into the wind, Lindner made his league debut for West Adelaide on 16 June 1980 but failed to cement his place in the top side, playing only 4 games and kicking 2 goals for a season mainly spent in the reserves. He went on to win the 1981 SANFL Reserves Magarey Medal, despite only playing 10 reserves games for the year. Matthew Campbell (Australian Footballer)
Matthew Campbell (born 30 January 1964) is a former Australian rules footballer in the Victorian and Australian Football Leagues (VFL/AFL) and is now a media representative for a sports betting agency. Football career Campbell was recruited from South Australian National Football League (SANFL) club North Adelaide, and made his senior VFL debut with the Brisbane Bears in their inaugural match in 1987. Campbell made a name for himself as a quick wingman, and went on to play 79 games for the club (and kick 28 goals) between 1987 and 1993. Graham Cornes
Graham Studley Cornes OAM (born 31 March 1948 in Melbourne, Victoria) is a former Australian rules footballer and coach, as well as a media personality. From 1995 until early 2013, Cornes co-hosted a weekday drivetime sports program that he hosts on Adelaide radio station 5AA, first with Ken "KG" Cunningham and, following Cunningham's retirement in 2008, with Stephen Rowe. In 2012 he was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. Cornes is also a Vietnam veteran, having served as an infantry soldier with the 7th Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment in 1968. Mark Naley
Mark Brendan Naley (11 March 1961 – 6 July 2020) was an Australian rules footballer who played with in the VFL/AFL and South Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Heritage Growing up, Naley had been told that his paternal grandfather was of Afghan descent. This was to explain away the fact that some family members had darker than usual complexions. Later it came to light that in fact, Naley's grandfather, Charles Gordon Naley, was Aboriginal. Charles had served with the Australian Army at Gallipoli. Wounded and shipped to England for treatment, Charles eventually married his English nurse, Cecilia. Tassie Medal
The Tassie Medal was awarded to the outstanding player at each Australian rules football Interstate Carnival or Australian interstate championship series held between 1937 and 1988 with the exception of the 1975 knock-out series. The medal is named after Eric Tassie who was a South Australian football administrator who served with distinction on the Australian National Football Council. Unlike with many other such awards, for example the Brownlow Medal, the word 'fairest' was never included in the description, meaning that reported players remained eligible to receive it. Greg Williams (Australian Footballer)
Gregory Donald Williams (born 30 September 1963) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented , the Sydney Swans and in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the 1980s and 1990s. A midfielder, he is a dual Brownlow Medal winner and at his peak was the then highest-paid player in the history of the sport.
