1985 New Year Honours (New Zealand)
The 1985 New Year Honours in New Zealand were appointments by Elizabeth II on the advice of the New Zealand government to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by New Zealanders. The awards celebrated the passing of 1984 and the beginning of 1985, and were announced on 31 December 1984. The recipients of honours are displayed here as they were styled before their new honour. Elizabeth II
Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; 21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. Raumati South
Raumati South is a coastal community on the Kapiti Coast of New Zealand's North Island. It is 50km north-west of Wellington, and immediately south of Raumati Beach and south-west of Paraparaumu. Paeroa
Paeroa is a town in the Hauraki District of the Waikato Region in the North Island of New Zealand. Located at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula, it is close to the junction of the Waihou River and Ohinemuri River, and is approximately 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) south of the Firth of Thames. New Zealanders know the town for its mineral springs, which in the past provided the water used in a local soft drink, " Lemon & Paeroa". The town stands at the intersection of State Highways 2 and 26, and is the central service location for the Hauraki District. Leo Bensemann
Leo Vernon Bensemann (1 May 1912 – 2 January 1986) was a New Zealand artist, printer, typographer, publisher and editor. Bensemenn was born in Tākaka, New Zealand, on 1 May 1912. He moved to Christchurch in 1931 with his friend Lawrence Baigent. In February 1938, Bensemann and Baigent moved into a flat at 97 Cambridge Terrace where artist Rita Angus was living. On Angus's nomination he joined The Group in 1938. Seven of the nine works he submitted to this exhibition were portraits – including a self-portrait, a portrait of Rita Angus and one of Lawrence Baigent. In 1937 the Caxton Press printed their first art publication, Bensemann's “Fantastica: Thirteen Drawings”. Bensemann assisted with the printing of the book and this led to his joining Caxton Press in 1938. He stayed with Caxton until 1978. The New Zealand Law Society ( mi, Te Kāhui Ture o Aotearoa) is the parent body for barristers and solicitors in New Zealand. It was established in 1869, and regulates all lawyers practising in New Zealand. Bruce Slane
Sir Bruce Houlton Slane (10 August 1931 – 7 January 2017) was a New Zealand public servant and lawyer. He served as New Zealand's first Privacy Commissioner from 1993 to 2003. Slane was educated at Takapuna Grammar School and Auckland University, graduating with a law degree in 1957. Allan Pyatt
William Allan Pyatt, (known as Allan; also spelled Alan or Allen; 4 November 1916 – 24 November 1991), was Bishop of Christchurch in the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia from 1966 to 1983. He was born on 4 November 1916 and educated at Christchurch Technical College and the University of Auckland. He served with the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force throughout the Second World War and was ordained in 1946. After a curacy at St Luke's Church, Cannock he had incumbencies in Brooklyn, Hāwera then Wellington. From 1962 until his ordination to the episcopate in 1966 he was Dean of ChristChurch Cathedral. Charles Philip Littlejohn
Charles Philip Littlejohn (11 January 1923 – 14 September 2014) was the eleventh Clerk of the New Zealand House of Representatives ("Clerk of the House"). As Clerk of the House he was head of the Legislative Department, responsible for administrative services to Parliament prior to the creation of the Parliamentary Service in 1985 and the Office of the Clerk of the House of Representatives in 1988. After studying at the Karangahake and Waitakere Primary Schools, Warkworth District High School and Helensville District High School, Littlejohn began his career in the public service on 26 February 1940, when he was appointed as a Clerical Cadet with the Lands and Survey Department in Auckland.
