1972 NCAA University Division Soccer Championship
The 1972 NCAA University Division Men's Soccer Tournament was the fourteenth organized men's college soccer tournament by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, to determine the top University Division college soccer team in the United States. The Saint Louis Billikens won their ninth national title by defeating the UCLA Bruins in the championship game, 4–2. The final match was played on December 29, 1972, in Miami, Florida, at the Miami Orange Bowl for the second straight year. Saint Louis Billikens Men's Soccer
The Saint Louis Billikens men's soccer team is an intercollegiate varsity sports team of Saint Louis University. The Saint Louis Billikens compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I. Soccer is the main fall sport at SLU, which has not sponsored football since 1949. Noted for their dominance in men's collegiate soccer during the late 1950s through the mid-1970s, the Billikens have won 10 NCAA Men's Soccer Championships, the most of any men's college soccer program in Division 1. Army Black Knights Men's Soccer
The Army Black Knights men's soccer program represents the United States Military Academy (West Point) in all NCAA Division I men's college soccer competitions. Founded in 1921, the Black Knights compete in the Patriot League. The Black Knights play in the Patriot League and are coached by Russell Payne, a former goalkeeper who played in the A-League (the United Soccer League's second division predecessor). Army plays their home matches at Clinton Field in West Point, New York. The Fresno State Bulldogs are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent California State University, Fresno (commonly referred to as Fresno State). The university is a member of NCAA Division I's Mountain West Conference (MW). The Penn State Nittany Lions men's soccer team is an intercollegiate varsity sports team of Pennsylvania State University. The team is a member of the Big Ten Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The Drexel Dragons men's soccer team represents Drexel University. The team is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. In 1955, the team finished with a record of 11-3-1 and won the Middle Atlantic Conferences (MAC) championship for the first time. After finishing the regular season tied for first place in the conference's Southeastern division, they won a one-game playoff against Bucknell, and then went on to defeat Rutgers in the conference championship game. In 1958 with a 12-0-0 record, the team was awarded the National Championship by the Intercollegiate Soccer Football Association of America, then the governing body of men's college soccer. The West Virginia Mountaineers men's soccer team is the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I soccer team of West Virginia University (WVU). Beginning with the 2012 season, the team was an affiliate member of the Mid-American Conference because WVU is the only school in its primary conference, the Big 12 Conference, that has a varsity men's soccer team. The Clemson Tigers men's soccer team represent Clemson University in the Atlantic Coast Conference of NCAA Division I soccer.
