1970 Yukon General Election
The 1970 Yukon general election was held on 8 September 1970 to elect the seven members of the 22nd Yukon Territorial Council. The council was non-partisan and had merely an advisory role to the federally appointed Commissioner. There were twenty-one candidates, and 5,152 out of a potential 7,700 electors voted, a turnout of 66.9%. The members elected to the council were Hilda Watson, Ken McKinnon, Norman Chamberlist, Don Taylor, Clive Tanner, Mike Stutter and Ronald Rivett."Two former members defeated as Yukon elects new councillors". Yukon Territorial Council
The Yukon Territorial Council was a political body in the Canadian territory of Yukon, prior to the creation of the Yukon Legislative Assembly. Although not a full legislature, the council acted as an advisory body to the Commissioner of Yukon, and had the power to pass non-binding motions of legislation which would be forwarded to the commissioner for consideration. Whitehorse West is an electoral district which returns a member (known as an MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of the Yukon Territory in Canada. The Whitehorse district is the smallest riding, by size, in the Yukon and includes the subdivisions of Logan, Ingram, Arkell, and part of Copper Ridge. Don Branigan
Donald W. Branigan (1933 – June 27, 1999) was a Canadian politician and medical doctor, best known as a former mayor of Whitehorse, Yukon. As a medical doctor, he was also noted for his frequent legal conflicts with medical licensing bodies opposed to his use of holistic medical practices such as acupuncture. Watson Lake (electoral District)
Watson Lake is an electoral district which returns a member (known as an MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of the Yukon Territory in Canada. The riding is one of the Yukon's eight rural ridings and is one of the oldest ridings in the Yukon. Jean Gordon (politician)
Gertrude Jean Gordon (March 6, 1918 – September 5, 2008) was a Canadian politician. She was the first woman ever elected to the Yukon Territorial Council, serving from 1967 to 1970. Biography Gordon was born in 1918 in Vancouver, British Columbia and grew up in the B.C. towns of Alice Arm and Stewart. She met Wilfred Gordon in Stewart and married him in 1937 when she was 19 years old; a year later they moved to Dawson City, Yukon. In Dawson City, the Gordons took up animal trapping and raised three bear cubs. They lived there until 1945, when they moved to Mayo, Yukon so that their young daughter could attend school and socialise with other children. In Mayo, Gordon started volunteering: she was a secretary and treasurer for the Mayo Community Club, an accountant for the Mayo Community Theatre, and a columnist for the local newspaper, the ''Whitehorse Star''. Mayo (electoral District)
Mayo was an electoral district which returned an MLA to the Legislative Assembly of the Yukon Territory in Canada. It was created in 1928, at a time when it was one of three districts who elected advisors to the Yukon Territorial Council. The more contemporary, final iteration of the riding was created from an amalgamation of the riding with part of the riding of Klondike. It was abolished in 1992 when it was amalgamated with the riding of Tatchun to form the riding of Mayo-Tatchun. The district included the communities of Mayo, Keno, Elsa, and Stewart Crossing along the Silver Trail. At the time, it was one of the Yukon's nine rural ridings and was bordered by the ridings of Tatchun, Klondike, and Campbell. It was situated on the traditional territory of the Selkirk First Nation and the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun.
