1948 Locomotive Exchange Trials
The 1948 Locomotive Exchange Trials were organised by the newly nationalised British Railways (BR). Locomotives from the former "Big Four" constituent companies (Great Western Railway, GWR, London, Midland and Scottish Railway, LMS, London and North Eastern Railway, LNER, Southern Railway (Great Britain), SR) were transferred to and worked on other regions. Officially, these comparisons were to identify the best qualities of the four different schools of thought of locomotive design so that they could be used in the planned Steam locomotives of British Railways#BR standard classes, BR standard designs. However, the testing had little scientific rigour, and political influence meant that LMS practice was largely followed by the new standard designs regardless. LNER Class A4 60034 Lord Faringdon
LNER Class A4 60034 Lord Faringdon (or formerly ''4903 Peregrine'' as it was before being renumbered under British Railways) was one of 35 Doncaster built Class A4 Gresley Pacific steam locomotives. It entered service on 1 July 1938 and was withdrawn on 24 August 1966. History ''Lord Faringdon'' was one of a small number of A4 Pacifics built with a double chimney and double Kylchap blastpipe. The first locomotive to have this being no. 4468 "Mallard". ''60034 Lord Faringdon'' was based at Kings Cross and ran on the London-Edinburgh line. LNER Class A4
The Class A4 is a class of streamlined 4-6-2 steam locomotive designed by Nigel Gresley for the London and North Eastern Railway in 1935. Their streamlined design gave them high-speed capability as well as making them instantly recognisable, and one of the class, 4468 ''Mallard'', holds the world record as the fastest steam locomotive. Thirty-five of the class were built to haul express passenger trains on the East Coast Main Line route from London Kings Cross via York to Newcastle, and later via Newcastle to Edinburgh, Scotland. They remained in service on the East Coast Main Line until the early 1960s when they were replaced by Deltic diesel locomotives; they themselves proving to be worthy successors to the A4s. Royal Scot (train)
The ''Royal Scot'' was a named passenger express train that ran between London Euston and Glasgow Central on the West Coast Main Line (WCML), with previously a portion also going to Edinburgh. History Steam era The timetabled service which eventually was known as the ''Royal Scot'' first ran in 1862. For many years it departed from both ends at 10:00 (mirroring the '' Flying Scotsman'' on the East Coast Main Line). GWR King Class
The Great Western Railway (GWR) 6000 Class or King Class is a class of 4-6-0 steam locomotives designed for express passenger work and introduced in 1927. They were the largest locomotives built by the GWR, apart from the unique Pacific ( ''The Great Bear''). LMS Coronation Class
The London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Coronation Class is a class of express passenger steam locomotives designed by William Stanier. They were an enlarged and improved version of his previous design, the LMS Princess Royal Class, and on test were the most powerful steam locomotives ever used in Britain at 2,511 dbhp. The locomotives were specifically designed for power as it was intended to use them on express services between London Euston and Glasgow Central; their duties were to include the hauling of a proposed non-stop express, subsequently named the ''Coronation Scot''. LMS Rebuilt Royal Scot Class
The London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Rebuilt Royal Scot Class is a class of 4-6-0 steam locomotives. 70 members of this class were rebuilt by the LMS and its successor British Railways (BR) from LMS Royal Scot Class engines by the replacement of their life expired parallel boilers with a type 2A boiler over the period 1943–1955. (The class sometimes is numbered 71 as it included a prototype 1935 rebuild LMS (4)6170 British Legion, but sufficient technical differences existed which dictate that it is treated separately).
