1914 Sydney Carnival
The 1914 Sydney Carnival was the third edition of the Australian National Football Carnival, an Australian rules football interstate competition. It was held between Wednesday 5 August and Saturday 15 August 1914. Victoria was the winning state, going undefeated through the competition. The carnival, which was the first to take place in New South Wales, was contested by teams from each of the six states: Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, New South Wales and Queensland. Interest in the event was overshadowed by the declarations of war by Britain on Germany on 4 August, and the opening manoeuvres of World War I which followed. Altogether, the event made a loss, drawing at the gate enough to cover approximately half of its operating expenses. Teams Six teams competed at the Carnival. Australian Rules Football
Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. There are rules on how the ball can be handled; for example, players running with the ball must intermittently bounce or touch it on the ground. Throwing the ball is not allowed, and players must not get caught holding the ball. Angelo Congear
Angelo Nicholas Goucar Congear (5 May 1885 – 9 August 1986) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Port Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian National Football League between 1908 and 1922. Junior football (1902–1908) Congear started playing football in 1902 with the Australs Football Club. In 1908 he started playing for Semaphore Centrals, an affiliate of the Port Adelaide Football Club who he would debut for later that year. Port Adelaide (1908–1922) Angelo Congear debuted in Port Adelaide's fifth match of the 1908 SAFL season against Norwood at Adelaide Oval. In front of a then record crowd of 25,000 at Adelaide Oval, Congear would kick a goal on debut but Port Adelaide would end up losing the match by 13 points. Jim Jackson (Australian Rules Footballer)
James Jackson (28 April 1890 – 29 August 1976) was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda, Collingwood and Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League. Family The son of Thomas Charles Jackson (1856–1905) and Martha Anne Jackson, nee Cheetham (1861–1933), Jim Jackson was born at Maidstone in the north-west of Melbourne on 28 April 1890. Football Jackson was a wingman and had a long career with 17 years between his first and last season. He started his career at St Kilda in 1909 but after managing just one game crossed to Collingwood the following year. He was unlucky not to play in a premiership team during his time at the Magpies as he was on military service when they won in 1917 and 1919. He finished his career at Hawthorn, firstly in the VFA and then when the club joined the VFL in 1925 when he was appointed their inaugural VFL captain. Jack Green (footballer Born 1887)
John William Green (28 August 1887 - 6 May 1963) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong and Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Green played two games for Geelong in 1908. After two seasons out of the VFL, Green played a further eight seasons for Collingwood from 1911 to 1918. Green played in four Grand Finals for Collingwood, including the 1917 win against Fitzroy. Green is one of four Jack Green's to have played VFL/AFL football. The Carlton Football Club, nicknamed the Blues, is a professional Australian rules football club that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), the sport's top professional competition. Harry Haughton
Henry Irwin Haughton (2 January 1886 – 19 January 1958) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1910s. A versatile player from Northcote, Haughton was already 26 when recruited by Carlton but still managed to play for eight seasons. He was a dual premiership player at Carlton, appearing in their winning 1914 and 1915 Grand Final teams. In the first Grand Final he was used on a half back flank but played in the ruck the following year. Haughton, a New Zealander by birth, was also a member of the side which lost the 1916 Grand Final. Billy Dick
William John Dick (16 July 1889 – 18 November 1960) was an Australian rules footballer who played for and in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Career Dick made his debut for the Carlton Football Club in round 6 of the 1911 season. He left the club at the end of the 1918 season. Alf Baud
Alfred Miller Baud (20 September 1892 – 5 December 1986) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Baud was born in Nagambie and went to school there. After leaving school, he went to Bendigo for his first job in the Post Office and later moved to Melbourne. Baud first played with Carlton with 1913 and during his three-season career was a member of two premiership sides. The first came in 1914 when he played on the wing in the club's Grand Final victory and the other came the following season. He was captain in the 1915 Grand Final due to Billy Dick being suspended and started the game at half back. Soon after he joined the military, enlisting with the 5th Division as a signaller. After serving in Egypt and France, he was seriously wounded with a shrapnel injury to the head at Anzac Ridge in 1917, leaving him with reduced sight. Henry Richard Head (3 April 1887 – 20 December 1940 in Adelaide, South Australia), was an Australian rules football player who played 143 games with West Adelaide in the South Australian Football League (SAFL). Career Head made his league debut in 1906 as a teenager, and, in 1909, became just the second ever West Adelaide player to win a Magarey Medal, following on from teammate James Tierney's win in 1908. Tom Leahy (footballer)
Thomas Joseph Leahy (13 January 1888 – 7 May 1964) was an Australian rules footballer who played 111 games with North Adelaide and 58 games with West Adelaide in the SAFL. Family The son of George Joseph Leahy (1861-1910), and Annie Mary Leahy (1860-1929), née McKenzie, Thomas Joseph Leahy was born at Goodwood, South Australia on 13 January 1888. Ernie Johns
Ernie Johns was an Australian rules footballer who played for North Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian Football Association/League (SAFA/SAFL). A leading forward in the period leading up to the First World War, Johns led the goal-kicking for North Adelaide for three seasons, played in two premierships and captained the club to a Grand Final loss in 1914.
