10th Submarine Squadron (United Kingdom)
The 10th Submarine Squadron was an administrative unit of the Royal Navy. History The squadron was formed at HMNB Clyde, Faslane, Scotland, in the 1960s to direct the Resolution-class submarines equipped with Polaris missiles that formed part of the United Kingdom's strategic nuclear deterrent. The squadron would later direct the Vanguard-class submarines equipped with Trident missiles. In October 1993 the 3rd and 10th Squadrons at Faslane amalgamated into a new 1st Submarine Squadron (Watson). In February 2002 all existing squadrons were disbanded and replaced by three flotillas at the base ports of Devonport, Faslane and Portsmouth. Submarines Jane's Fighting Ships, 2004–2005. Squadron (naval)
A squadron, or naval squadron, is a significant group of warships which is nonetheless considered too small to be designated a fleet. A squadron is typically a part of a fleet. Between different navies there are no clear defining parameters to distinguish a squadron from a fleet (or from a flotilla), and the size and strength of a naval squadron varies greatly according to the country and time period. Groups of small warships, or small groups of major warships, might instead be designated flotillas by some navies according to their terminology. Since the size of a naval squadron varies greatly, the rank associated with command of a squadron also varies greatly. Before 1864 the entire fleet of the Royal Navy was divided into three squadrons, the red, the white, and the blue. Each Royal Navy squadron alone was more powerful than most national navies. Today, a squadron might number three to ten vessels, which might be major warships, transport ships, submarines, or small cra ...

HMS Revenge (S27)
HMS ''Revenge'' (S27) was the fourth of the Royal Navy's ballistic missile submarines. Construction The four ''Resolution''-class submarines were ordered on 8 May 1963, with ''Revenge'', the fourth of the class, laid down at Cammell Laird's Birkenhead shipyard on 19 May 1965. Construction of the two submarines being built at Lairds (''Revenge'' and ) was much slower than planned, with poor performance by Cammell Laird and in particular its workers to blame. At one stage the Ministry of Defence considered towing the unfinished submarines to Barrow-in-Furness for completion by Vickers-Armstrongs. ''Revenge'' was launched on 15 March 1968. She was formally commissioned on 4 December 1969. Design ''Revenge'' was long overall and between perpendiculars, with a beam of and a draught of . Displacement was surfaced and submerged. A PWR1 pressurised water reactor, designed and built by Rolls-Royce fed steam to geared steam turbines, with the machinery rated at , giv ...

Submarine Squadrons Of The Royal Navy
A submarine (or sub) is a watercraft capable of independent operation underwater. It differs from a submersible, which has more limited underwater capability. The term is also sometimes used historically or colloquially to refer to remotely operated vehicles and robots, as well as medium-sized or smaller vessels, such as the midget submarine and the wet sub. Submarines are referred to as ''boats'' rather than ''ships'' irrespective of their size. Although experimental submarines had been built earlier, submarine design took off during the 19th century, and they were adopted by several navies. They were first widely used during World War I (1914–1918), and are now used in many navies, large and small. Military uses include attacking enemy surface ships (merchant and military) or other submarines, and for aircraft carrier protection, blockade running, nuclear deterrence, reconnaissance, conventional land attack (for example, using a cruise missile), and covert insertion of s ...

10th Submarine Flotilla
The 10th Submarine Flotilla was formed during the First World War. In January 1915 it was based on the Humber but by January 1917 it had relocated to the Tees. During the Second World War it was formed at Malta in January 1941 and comprised Royal Navy and Polish Naval Force submarines assigned to the British Mediterranean Fleet based in Malta from early 1941. Second World War The flotilla was initially composed of the U-class submarines including , , , , , , , , , , HMS P38 and HMS Ursula (N59) together with and of the Polish Navy The U-class had been designed for training crews rather than combat but their diving performance made them the best choice for operating in the clear waters of the Mediterranean where submarines could be easily seen by aircraft. The flotilla's base in Malta was the ancient fort on Manoel Island, in the Marsamxett Harbour opposite Sliema; this shore base was called HMS ''Talbot''. The Lazzaretto of Manoel Island formed part of the quarters for ...

HMS Renown (S26)
HMS ''Renown'' (S26) was the third of the Royal Navy's ballistic missile submarines. Built by Cammell Laird and launched on 25 February 1967, she was decommissioned in 1996. Construction ''Renown'', like the other ''Resolution''-class submarines, was ordered on 8 May 1963 and was laid down at Cammell Laird's Birkenhead shipyard on 25 June 1964. Construction was slower than planned, with poor performance by Cammell Laird and its workforce resulting in both ''Renown'' and sister ship being delayed. In 1966, it was discovered that due to lax interpretation of drawings, ''Renown''s torpedo storage compartment differed in length by from the lead ship , and in November that year, broken bits of metal were found in the submarine's primary cooling circuits, the removal of which delayed construction by two months. ''Renown'' was launched on 25 February 1967 by Edna Healey, wife of Denis Healey, the Secretary of State for Defence. By October 1967, ''Revenge'' was six months behind ...
