The 1999–2000 Football League, 1999–2000 season was Port Vale F.C., Port Vale's 88th season of football in the English Football League, and sixth-successive season in the Football League First Division, First Division. Vale suffered Promotion and relegation, relegation in 23rd place, some 13 points adrift of safety. They also exited the FA Cup in the Third Round and were knocked out of the EFL Cup, League Cup in the First Round by fourth tier Chester City F.C., Chester City for the second consecutive season. Promotion and relegation is used by sports leagues as a process where teams can move up and down among divisions in a league system, based on their performance over a season. Leagues that use promotion and relegation systems are sometimes called open leagues. Steve Rimmer
Stephen Anthony Rimmer (born 23 May 1979) is an English former footballer. His career in the English Football League was brief but eventful, playing in front of a record-low crowd at Maine Road and getting sent off 23 minutes into his Port Vale debut. In 2000, he ventured into non-League football, and turned out for Marine, Hyde United, and Skelmersdale United. Career A product of the Manchester City youth system, he made one first-team appearance for the club on 8 December 1998. City lost 2–1 to Mansfield Town in the First Round of the Football League Trophy. Rimmer picked up a booking in a match primarily remembered as having Manchester City's lowest ever recorded attendance (just 3,007 turned up). Jeffrey Simon Thompson Minton (born 28 December 1973) is an English former professional footballer who plays as a midfielder. He scored 49 goals in 296 league and cup games in a ten-year career in the Football League. Minton began his career at Tottenham Hotspur, but only made two Premier League appearances before being allowed to join Brighton & Hove Albion in July 1994. Mark Goodlad
Mark Goodlad (born 9 September 1979) is an English former professional footballer who was most recently John Askey's assistant manager at club Hartlepool United. Goodlad was a goalkeeper and began his career at Nottingham Forest, playing on loan at Scarborough, before joining Port Vale in 2000. He became the Vale's first-choice keeper for several seasons until he was forced to retire due to injury in 2008. During his time at Vale Park, he was made Player of the Year in 2001–02 and also picked up a Football League Trophy winner's medal in 2001. He made 250 competitive appearances in a ten-year professional career, primarily in the third tier of the English Football League. Michael Thomas Cummins (born 1 June 1978) is an Irish former professional footballer. As a player, he was a midfielder from 1996 to 2014. He started his career with Middlesbrough in 1996, where he stayed for four years. In 2000, he moved on to Port Vale and made over 250 appearances for the club in a six-year stay, picking up a Football League Trophy winners medal in 2001. Between 2006 and 2008, he was signed to Darlington, and in 2008 he joined Rotherham United. Two years later, he transferred to Grimsby Town before he joined Gateshead in May 2011. Ian Bogie (born 6 December 1967) is a former professional footballer, and former manager of Gateshead and Stockport County. He spent two decades as a professional player; from 1985 until 2001, he played in the English Football League, where he made 382 appearances. He started at Newcastle United in the mid-1980s, he signed with Preston North End in 1989, moving on to Millwall two years later. In 1993, he joined Leyton Orient, and after another two years, moved on to Port Vale, where he saw out the century. A legend at Vale, he made over 150 appearances. Paul Musselwhite
Paul Stephen Musselwhite (born 22 December 1968) is an English former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper and is the goalkeeping coach at club Scunthorpe United. He made 692 appearances in the league and 815 appearances in all competitions. Musselwhite began his career with Portsmouth before joining Scunthorpe United in March 1988. He played 132 league matches for the club, as Scunthorpe suffered numerous play-off defeats before he was sold to Port Vale in July 1992 for a £17,500 fee. He spent the next eight years with Vale and played 312 league matches in what was one of the most successful periods in the club's history. Martin John Foyle (born 2 May 1963) is an English former professional footballer and manager who is the Head of Recruitment at club Carlisle United. In his 20-year playing career, he played 533 League games, scoring 155 goals. As a manager, he took charge of Port Vale and York City, Northwich Victoria, Hereford United and Southport. Foyle started his career with Southampton as a trainee, and after spending four years at the club, during which he was loaned out on two occasions, he joined Aldershot for a £10,000 fee in August 1984.
