Newfoundland House Of Assembly
The Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly () is the Unicameralism, unicameral deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It meets in the Confederation Building (Newfoundland and Labrador), Confederation Building in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, St. John's. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the lieutenant governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, in the name of the King of Canada. The governing party sits on the left side of the speaker of the House of Assembly as opposed to the traditional right side of the speaker. This tradition dates back to the 1850s as the heaters in the Colonial Building were located on the left side. Joan Marie Aylward
Joan Marie J. Aylward (born 1956) is a Canadian former politician serving as the 15th and current lieutenant governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. She previously sat in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1996 to 2003 as a member of the Liberals. She represented the electoral district of St. John's Centre. Born in 1956, she was educated at the General Hospital School of Nursing, completing her nursing degree at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Aylward was an intensive care nurse at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital. From 1984 to 1990, she served on the faculty of the St. Clare's School of Nursing. Aylward served five years as president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Nurses Union. She served in the Newfoundland cabinet as Minister of Social Services, as Minister of Health, as Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, as Minister of Finance and as president of Treasury Board. Jim Walsh (Canadian Politician)
James P. Walsh (born 1949) is a businessperson and former politician in Newfoundland and Labrador. He represented Conception Bay East – Bell Island in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1989 to 2003. He was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador. Walsh married Barbara Best; the couple had four children. Before entering politics, he was managing director of the Young Group of Companies. Walsh was also president of Hospitality Newfoundland and was host of a CBC television show called ''Quiz Kids''. Walsh ran unsuccessfully for the Bay of Islands seat in the Newfoundland assembly in 1979. He was elected to the assembly in 1989 for Mount Scio–Bell Island and was reelected in 1993, 1995 and 1999. Conception Bay East–Bell Island
Conception Bay East–Bell Island is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011 there are 11,011 eligible voters living within the district. Primarily an exurban district within the St. John's Metropolitan Area, the district includes Bell Island (which is linked by a ferry service to the rest of the district), the town of Portugal Cove–St. Philip's, the St. Thomas part of the town of Paradise, and the watershed area along Thorburn Road. The district was considered fairly safe for the Progressive Conservative Party until Liberal Fred Hutton won a by-election on January 30, 2024. The riding was created in 1985 as Mount Scio-Bell Island out of parts of Harbour Main-Bell Island, St. John's East Extern, Mount Scio, Conception Bay South and a small part of Mount Pearl. Jack Byrne (June 2, 1951 – June 4, 2008) was a Canadian politician. He represented the riding of Cape St. Francis in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. He was a member of the Progressive Conservatives. Politics Formerly the mayor of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove from 1986 to 1993, he was first elected to the House in the 1993 provincial election representing the district of St. John's East Extern. He moved to the redistricted riding of Cape St. Francis in the 1996 election, and represented that district until his death. He served as Minister of Municipal Affairs from 2003 to 2007 and from 2007 till his death he served as Deputy Speaker of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. Walter Noel is a Canadian politician. He was first elected to Newfoundland's House of Assembly as the Member of the House of Assembly (MHA) for Pleasantville in 1989, and re-elected in 1993. Noel was re-elected with the assistance of local Nfld Reform Party of Canada organizers. Noel also worked on the campaign to stop the Wells administration from privatizing Nfld & Lab Hydro. Virginia Waters (foaled 15 February 2002) is an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. In a racing career which lasted from September 2004 to October 2005 she ran twelve times and won three races. After winning once from four starts as a two-year-old, she won the Group Three Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes on her first appearance of 2005. She then recorded her most important success when winning the Classic 1000 Guineas two of her six races including an upset win in the Group Two Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse. Tom Osborne (born 1964) is a politician in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. He represented the district of Waterford Valley in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1996 to 2024. He was a member of the Liberal Party, a former member of the Progressive Conservative Party, and a former Minister in Danny Williams' first cabinet. He served as Minister of Health and Community Services, and Minister of Education in the Furey government. He was Speaker of the House of Assembly from 2015 to 2017.
