Conception Bay East–Bell Island
Conception Bay East–Bell Island is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011 there are 11,011 eligible voters living within the district. Primarily an exurban district within the St. John's Metropolitan Area, the district includes Bell Island (which is linked by a ferry service to the rest of the district), the town of Portugal Cove–St. Philip's, the St. Thomas part of the town of Paradise, and the watershed area along Thorburn Road. The district was considered fairly safe for the Progressive Conservative Party until Liberal Fred Hutton won a by-election on January 30, 2024. The riding was created in 1985 as Mount Scio-Bell Island out of parts of Harbour Main-Bell Island, St. John's East Extern, Mount Scio, Conception Bay South and a small part of Mount Pearl. 2024 Conception Bay East–Bell Island Provincial By-election
The 2024 Conception Bay East–Bell Island provincial by-election was held on January 30, 2024. The election was triggered by the resignation of Progressive Conservative MHA David Brazil. The election was originally scheduled for January 29, but was moved a day later due to winter storm warning. Fred Hutton
Fred Hutton is a Canadian politician from Newfoundland and Labrador. he was elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly for the Liberal Party in the 2024 Conception Bay East–Bell Island provincial by-election. The district had been held by Progressive Conservatives for the previous 20 years. On February 29, 2024, he was appointed Minister of Housing and Minister responsible for the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. On July 19, 2024, he was appointed as Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. Hutton formerly worked as a journalist and advisor to Premier Andrew Furey. He worked as both a news director and a morning show co-host at VOCM. Conception Bay South is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011 there are 9,938 eligible voters living within the district. Composed of part of the town of Conception Bay South. A mix of rural and suburban populations, especially as the town of Conception Bay South grows. The district includes the communities of Foxtrap, Long Pond, Manuels, Kelligrews and part of Chamberlains. It is part of the St. John's metropolitan area. Gerald (Gerry) Ernest Panting (May 17, 1927 —December 3, 1998) was a Memorial University of Newfoundland professor specializing in maritime history, and leader of the Newfoundland NDP from 1974 to 1977. George Murphy (Canadian Politician)
George Walter Murphy (April 22, 1963 – June 5, 2021) was a Canadian politician, who served in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 2011 to 2015. He represented the electoral district of St. John's East for the Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party. Politics Murphy first ran for election as a Liberal candidate in the district of St. John's East in the 2003 election, placing second with 14.56 per cent of the vote. In November 2010 Murphy decided to leave the Liberal party and run for the NDP nomination in the Conception Bay East-Bell Island by-election. Danny Dumaresque
Danny Wade Dumaresque (born November 6, 1959) is a Canadian politician. He represented the riding of Eagle River in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1989 to 1996 as a member of the Liberal Party. Dumaresque has been a Director of NL Hydro and an outspoken critic of the Muskrat Falls hydro development. Dumaresque is founder of Labrador Gem Seafoods. In the 1996 election, Dumaresque defeated Yvonne Jones for the Liberal nomination in the redistricted riding of Cartwright-L'Anse au Clair. Jones ran as an independent candidate, however, and defeated Dumaresque in the general election. She later joined the Liberal caucus. David J. Brazil ( ; born September 20, 1963) is a Canadian politician from Newfoundland and Labrador. He represented the district of Conception Bay East - Bell Island in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 2010 until 2023. James P. Walsh (born 1949) is a businessperson and former politician in Newfoundland and Labrador. He represented Conception Bay East – Bell Island in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1989 to 2003. He was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador. Leo Denis Barry (born August 7, 1943) is a Canadian jurist and current Justice of the Court of Appeal of Newfoundland and Labrador. He was born in Red Island, Newfoundland and Labrador. Stephen Aloysius Neary (June 21, 1925 – June 7, 1996) was a Newfoundlander and Canadian politician and cabinet minister who served as the provincial Leader of the Official Opposition.
