The race was won by Michele Bartoli of the Mapei team. Michele Bartoli
Michele Bartoli (born 27 May 1970, in Pisa) is a retired Italian road racing cyclist. Bartoli was a professional from 1992 until 2004 and was one of the most successful classic cycle races, single-day classics specialists of his generation, especially in the Italian and Belgian races. On his palmarès are three of the five Cycling monument, monuments of cycling—five in total: the 1996 Tour of Flanders, the 1997 Liège–Bastogne–Liège, 1997 and 1998 Liège–Bastogne–Liège and the 2002 and 2003 Giro di Lombardia. Michael Boogerd
Michael Boogerd (born 28 May 1972) is a Dutch former professional road bicycle racer. He was one of the leaders of a generation of Dutch cyclists in the late 1990s and early 2000s, together with teammate Erik Dekker and female cyclist Leontien van Moorsel. Career Boogerd was born in The Hague, and began his professional career in 1994, joining ''WordPerfect''. In 1995 the team changed name to ''Novell'', before Rabobank in 1996 became main sponsor and name for the team. Boogerd stayed with the team his entire career. His speciality were hilly classics like Liège–Bastogne–Liège, La Flèche Wallonne and the Amstel Gold Race in the Ardennes week and the Lombardian races in the Fall, as well as mountain-stages. Paolo Savoldelli
Paolo Savoldelli (born 7 May 1973 in Clusone, province of Bergamo) is a former Italian road racing cyclist and winner of the 2002 and 2005 Giro d'Italia. Savoldelli was a climber but known for his fast downhill riding. He is nicknamed ''Il Falco'' ("the falcon"). His downhill skills won him the 2005 Giro. His descent of the Colle delle Finestre before the final ascent to Sestriere in the penultimate stage, closed a gap to Gilberto Simoni, preserving his lead and giving him the win. On 20 July 2005, Savoldelli won the 17th stage of the Tour de France. He led in the 2007 Giro d'Italia, but worked for teammate Eddy Mazzoleni. Savoldelli retired from competitive professional cycling at the end of the 2008 season. He did not leave the cycling world however, as he embarked on a career covering the sport in the media. Jens Voigt
Jens Voigt (; born 17 September 1971) is a German former professional road bicycle racer and, upon retirement, became a cycling sports broadcast commentator. During his cycling career, Voigt raced for several teams, the last one being UCI ProTeam . Voigt wore the yellow jersey of the Tour de France twice, though he was never a contender for the overall title owing to the mountainous nature of the stages of the race being better suited to climbing specialists. His career achievements include winning the Critérium International a record-tying 5 times and a number of one-week stage races, as well as two Tour de France stage victories. In September 2014, he set a new hour record. Marco Velo (born 9 March 1974 in Brescia) is a retired Italian professional road bicycle racer. Professional career Velo, who started his career with Brescialat, is a talented time-trialist, winning the Italian National Time Trial Championship on three occasions—1998, 1999 and 2000. Since 2002, Velo has ridden as a domestique for Alessandro Petacchi, first at Fassa Bortolo. In 2005, Velo wanted to go join Matteo Tosatto at the Quick Step team, but in the end joined Petacchi at the Domina Vacanze team, but when that disbanded at the end of the year, they both moved to Milram at the start of 2006. Udo Bölts
Udo Bölts (born 10 August 1966) is a retired German racing cyclist, the brother of Hartmut Bölts. Bölts confessed publicly in 2007 to having used EPO and growth hormones in 1996 and 1997. Biography Bölts was born in Heltersberg and began his professional career in 1989 with , from which were formed in 1991. From 1992 to 2003, Bölts took part in 12 consecutive Tours de France, arriving in Paris on every occasion, both of which feats are German records. These records have since been surpassed by Jens Voigt. His best placing in the hardest stage race in the world was in 1994, when he was ninth. In 1996 and 1997, he was an important helper of teammates and eventual winners of the Tour, Bjarne Riis and Jan Ullrich. Oscar Camenzind (born 12 September 1971 in Schwyz, Switzerland) is a former professional road racing cyclist from Switzerland. He became national road champion in 1997. In 1998 he won the World Road Championship and the Giro di Lombardia, in 2000 the Tour de Suisse and Liège–Bastogne–Liège in 2001. His career came to an abrupt end when he retired from pro cycling after a positive doping test in July 2004 for erythropoietin, leading into the Athens Olympics. After confessing to the use, in 2005 he was sued in Swiss court in order to name his supplier, which he refused to do fearing retribution. Mapei (cycling Team)
Mapei was an Italian-based road bicycle racing team active from 1993 to 2002, named after sponsoring firm Mapei. From 2003 Mapei dropped their sponsorship, and a new team was built on top of the old with the name of Quick Step-Davitamon. Mapei was one of the strongest teams during the late 1990s, and ranked as the strongest UCI team in 1994-2000 and 2002. The team had the great Belgian and Italian classic specialists of the 1990s such as Johan Museeuw, Michele Bartoli, Andrea Tafi, Franco Ballerini, and had Patrick Lefevre as directeur sportif and then manager. The team won Paris–Roubaix five times. Three times (1996, 1998 and 1999) the team even won the first three places. In the 1996 edition, the sprint for the line was decided 15 km from the finish.
