1998–99 South African Premiership
The 1998–99 Premiership, known as the 1998–99 Castle Premiership for sponsorship purposes, and also commonly referred to as the PSL after the governing body, was the third season of the Premiership since its establishment in 1996. The season began on 31 July 1998 and ended on 9 June 1999. Mamelodi Sundowns became the first team in Premiership history to defend their title as they won their second straight Premiership title and their fifth South African title after previously winning the Premiership's predecessor - the National Soccer League - on three occasions (1988, 1990 and 1993). In a hotly contested title race between Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs it came down to goal difference to separate the two as both finished on a joint record 75 points. A margin of +5 in goal difference was all that separated the two teams as Sundowns won their second in what would be a hat-trick of Premiership titles. The South African Premiership, also known as the Betway Premiership for sponsorship reasons, and commonly referred to as the PSL after its governing body, is a professional soccer league in South Africa and the highest level of the South African soccer league system. It has been organised since 1996. The 2024–25 season started on 14 September 2024, Mamelodi Sundowns successfully defended the title in 2025 which they've held continuously since the 2017–18 season. History The league was founded in 1996 after an agreement between the National Soccer League and the remnants of the National Professional Soccer League. This victory would be the first in a hat-trick of Premiership titles for Sundowns, as the team from Pretoria would go on to dominate the league for the next two seasons. Jomo Cosmos is a South African soccer club based in Johannesburg that plays in the ABC Motsepe League. The club is owned and coached by South African football legend Jomo Sono. Seven Stars were an association football club from Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa. History Seven Stars F.C. was formed in 1995 by Rob Moore. They are also known for the commitment to develop talent in under developed the Langa, Khayelitsha and Nyanga and used the under-developed Nyanga Stadium as a home venue. National Soccer League
The National Soccer League (NSL) was the top-level soccer league in Australia, run by Soccer Australia and later the Australian Soccer Association. The NSL, the A-League's predecessor, spanned 28 seasons from its inception in 1977 until its demise in 2004, when it was succeeded by the A-League competition run by Football Federation Australia, the successor to the Australian Soccer Association.
