1998 MLS College Draft
The 1998 Major League Soccer College Draft was held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on January 31 and February 1, 1998. The College Draft was followed by the 1998 MLS Supplemental Draft. Format On Saturday, January 31, 1998, Major League Soccer held the first round of its 1998 college draft during the halftime of the Umbro Select All-Star Classic at Lockhart Stadium. The second and third rounds took place Sunday morning at the Airport Hilton in Fort Lauderdale. The 1998 MLS Supplemental Draft took place that afternoon at the same location. Major League Soccer
Major League Soccer (MLS) is a professional Association football, soccer league in North America and the highest level of the United States soccer league system. It comprises 30 teams, with 27 in the United States and 3 in Canada, and is sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation. Mike Sorber
Michael Steven Sorber (born May 14, 1971) is an American soccer coach and former player. He most recently served as an assistant head coach for Toronto FC in Major League Soccer. He played professionally in the United States and Mexico and was a member of the U.S. national team at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Youth and college Sorber was born and raised in Florissant, Missouri in the St. Louis area, where his father Pete Sorber was the head coach of the St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley men's soccer team for 30 years. Brian Bliss
Brian Boyer Bliss (born September 28, 1965) is a retired American soccer defender and front office executive. He also serves as an assistant coach for the United States U-20 national team. Bliss played professionally in Europe and the United States, including the original Major Indoor Soccer League, American Soccer League, and American Professional Soccer League. He earned forty-four caps, scoring two goals, with the U.S. national soccer team and was part of 1990 FIFA World Cup squad. Josh Keller
Josh Keller (born February 16, 1975, in Laguna Niguel, California) is a retired American soccer midfielder who spent four seasons in Major League Soccer. Keller attended UCLA, playing on the men's soccer team from 1994 to 1997. In 1997, he was captain of the team when it won the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship. He graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in psychology and business. In March 1998, the Tampa Bay Mutiny selected Keller in the first round (seventh overall) in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He played nine games for the Mutiny in 1998 before being traded to the Chicago Fire on June 29, 1998, in exchange for Jorge Salcedo. He played six games for the Fire that season. Tampa Bay Mutiny
The Tampa Bay Mutiny were an American professional soccer team based in Tampa, Florida. The club competed in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Eastern Conference. The Mutiny were a charter member of MLS, playing from 1996 to 2001. The team played its home games at Tampa Stadium and then at Raymond James Stadium. The Mutiny were established in 1994 and were owned and operated by MLS throughout its entire existence. Clint Mathis (born November 25, 1976) is an American former professional soccer player who played as a forward or midfielder. He appeared at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, scoring one goal. He also played in Major League Soccer for the MetroStars, where he scored five goals during a game in August 2000, a league record. Johnny Torres
Johnny Torres (born April 24, 1976) is a Colombian-American soccer midfielder and coach who is currently the head coach of his alma mater, Creighton Bluejays, Creighton University.
