Group 9 consisted of six of the 50 teams entered into the European zone: Albania national football team, Albania, Armenia national football team, Armenia, Germany national football team, Germany, Northern Ireland national football team, Northern Ireland, Portuguese national football team, Portugal, and Ukraine national football team, Ukraine. These six teams competed on a home-and-away basis for two of the 15 spots in 1998 FIFA World Cup, the final tournament allocated to the European zone, with the group's winner and runner-up claiming those spots. The France national football team () represents France in men's international Association football, football.
