1997–98 Southampton F.C. Season
The 1997–98 Southampton F.C. season was the club's 97th season of competitive football, their 28th (and 20th consecutive) in the top flight of English football, and their sixth in the FA Premier League. It was the first season to feature Dave Jones (footballer, born 1956), Dave Jones as the club's manager – the first appointed by new chairman Rupert Lowe, who took over from Guy Askham at the end of 1996–97 Southampton F.C. season, 1996–97. The campaign was the Saints' best in the league since 1994–95 Southampton F.C. season, 1994–95, as the club finished 12th in the table after two seasons in which they avoided relegation by a single point. Pride Park Stadium is an all-seater football stadium in Derby, England, which is the home ground of English Football League club Derby County. With a capacity of 33,597, it is the 16th-largest football ground in England. David Hirst (footballer)
David Eric Hirst (born 7 December 1967) is an English football coach and former professional footballer. As a player, he was a striker who after initially playing with Barnsley he notably spent eleven years with Sheffield Wednesday, during his time at Hillsborough he played Premier League football and played in both the 1993 FA Cup and League Cup finals. He scored 106 league goals in 294 appearances and continuously played in the first seven Premier League seasons, which included three years with Southampton before retiring through injury at the age of 32. He was capped three times by England, scoring 1 goal and also made appearances at England U21 and England B level. Since retiring, Hirst has worked at Sheffield Wednesday and Crystal Palace as an academy coach, he has also worked back with Wednesday as a host in their corporate hospitality suites. Lee Todd (footballer)
Lee Todd (born 7 March 1972) is an English retired professional footballer who played as a defender. Playing career Todd started his career in 1988 as a junior with Hartlepool United with whom he stayed until 1990. In the summer of 1990 Todd transferred to Stockport County on a free transfer. Lee spent seven years at Stockport notching up a total of 226 league appearances including two promotions and a League Cup Semi-Final appearance. In 1997 Todd was bought by his former Stockport County manager Dave Jones who was now managing Southampton paying £850,000 for his services. During his time at Southampton he played just ten league games, which included playing the full 90 minutes as Southampton won 3–2 against Liverpool at Anfield. Paul Steven Jones (born 18 April 1967) is a retired Welsh international football goalkeeper. During his playing career, he played for several clubs, including Wolverhampton Wanderers, Stockport County and Southampton. Career history Club career Born in Chirk near Wrexham, and educated in Shropshire at the Thomas Adams School in Wem, Jones started his career at Bridgnorth Town, joining Kidderminster Harriers in 1986 and then moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers for a fee of £60,000 in 1991. He only managed to play 44 games before moving on to Stockport County in 1996 where he was ever present in the 1996–97 season. Graeme Souness
Graeme James Souness (; born 6 May 1953) is a Scottish former professional football player, manager and television pundit. A midfielder, Souness achieved his greatest period of success as an integral part of the Liverpool team of the late 1970s and early 1980s, during which he won five First Division titles and three European Cup trophies. He was captain for three seasons at Liverpool until his departure to Sampdoria in 1984. Souness later became player-manager for Rangers, leading the club to three Scottish titles and four league cups.
