The 1997 Tirreno–Adriatico was the 32nd edition of the Tirreno–Adriatico cycle race and was held from 12 March to 19 March 1997. The race started in Sorrento and finished in San Benedetto del Tronto. The race was won by Roberto Petito of the Saeco team. Roberto Petito (born 1 February 1971) is an Italian former professional road bicycle racer. Petito was born in Civitavecchia. His most important win came in 1997, when he won the Tirreno–Adriatico. Michele Bartoli (born 27 May 1970, in Pisa) is a retired Italian road racing cyclist. Bartoli was a professional cyclist from 1992 until 2004 and was one of the most successful classic cycle races, single-day classics specialists of his generation, especially in the Italian and Belgian races. Mario Traversoni (born 12 April 1972 in Codogno, Province of Lodi) is an Italian former professional road bicycle racer. In Stage 19 of the 1997 Tour de France, Traversoni finished third, 26 seconds behind Bart Voskamp and Jens Heppner. However, both Voskamp and Heppner were disqualified for bumping shoulders some 50 yards from the finish. Dimitri Borisovich Konyshev (; born on February 18, 1966) is a retired Russian road bicycle racer. During Konyshev's 17-year professional cycling career, he won nine Grand Tour stages with at least one stage win in all three Grand Tours. He won four stages each in the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia, and one stage in the Vuelta a España. Konyshev was the first Soviet and Russian rider to win a medal in the Men's Road race at the UCI Road World Championships. He won a silver medal in 1989 behind Greg LeMond, and a bronze medal in 1992 behind Gianni Bugno and Laurent Jalabert.
