1997 Bloc Québécois Leadership Election
The 1997 Bloc Québécois leadership election was the leadership election that picked the new leader to replace Michel Gauthier as leader. The leadership election was conducted by a one member one vote, one member, one vote (OMOV) process involving all party members. 1996 Bloc Québécois Leadership Election
The 1996 Bloc Québécois leadership election was the leadership election to replace Lucien Bouchard after he left the Bloc Québécois to become Premier of Quebec, Premier of Quebec. Bloc MP Michel Gauthier won the election and became Leader of the Official Opposition (Canada), Leader of the Official Opposition. Gauthier's lack of profile resulted in some opposition parties mocking him as being the "faceless leader" of the opposition, as he was largely a political unknown in most of Canada and even in Quebec. His leadership was unpopular with the caucus due to alleged conservative views and his lack of "charisma or authority" when compared to Bouchard. Facing a revolt by his MPs, which culminated in the leaking of confidential caucus discussions, Gauthier resigned in March 1997. The Bloc Québécois (, , BQ) is a centre-left politics, centre-left and list of federal political parties in Canada, federal political party in Canada devoted to Quebec nationalism, Quebecois nationalism, social democracy, and the promotion of Quebec sovereignty movement, Quebecois sovereignty. The Bloc was formed in the early 1990s by Member of Parliament (Canada), Members of Parliament (MPs) who defected from the federal Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, Progressive Conservative Party and Liberal Party of Canada, Liberal Party during the collapse of the Meech Lake Accord. Lucien Bouchard, the first leader of the Bloc Québécois, was elected by acclamation by the MPs who formed the Bloc in 1990. Pierrette Venne
Pierrette Venne (born 8 August 1945 in Beauharnois, Quebec) was a member of the House of Commons of Canada from 1988 to 2003. By career, she is a lawyer. Venne was elected in the Saint-Hubert electoral district as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party in the 1988 general election. The riding had been created from a restructuring of two ridings. She was re-elected in Saint-Hubert in the 1993 general election, and was also re-elected in 1997 and 2000 when the riding was renamed Saint-Bruno—Saint-Hubert. Her term of office would cover the 34th, 35th, 36th and 37th Canadian Parliaments. She left the Conservatives to join the Bloc Québécois party on 12 August 1991. Daniel Turp (born April 30, 1955) is a professor of constitutional and international law at the Université de Montréal in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He served as a Bloc Québécois member of Parliament from 1997 to 2000 and as a Parti Québécois member of the Quebec National Assembly from 2003 to 2008. Early life and education Born in Montreal, Quebec, Turp was raised as a Roman Catholic but later converted to Presbyterianism. He is a member of the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul in Montreal. Turp studied law at the Université de Montréal and the University of Ottawa, and received his legal licence in Sherbrooke, Quebec in 1977. He earned a master's degree at the Université de Montréal in 1978. He has worked for the Canadian International Development Agency and was called as an expert for the Bélanger-Campeau Commission on Quebec's constitutional future. 1976 Quebec General Election
The 1976 Quebec general election was held on November 15, 1976 to elect members to National Assembly of Quebec, National Assembly of the Province of Quebec, Canada. It was one of the most significant elections in Quebec history, rivalled only by the 1960 Quebec general election, 1960 general election, and caused major repercussions in the rest of Canada.
