1996–97 Omani League
The 1996–97 Omani League was the 23rd edition of the top football league in Oman. Sur SC were the defending champions, having won the 1995–96 Omani League season. Oman Club emerged as the champions of the 1996–97 Omani League with a total of 49 points. Teams This season the number of teams in the league had decreased from 14 to 12. Al-Ahli Club, Buraimi SC, Al-Khaboura SC and Mirbat SC were relegated to the Second Division League after finishing in the relegation zone in the 1995–96 season. The four relegated teams were replaced by Second Division League teams Sohar SC and Fanja SC. The Oman Professional League (; known as the ''Omantel Professional League'' for sponsorship reasons), previously known as the Omantel Elite League, is the top division of the Oman Football Association, and was officially created in 1976. Currently, the most successful team in the league is Dhofar S.C.S.C., Dhofar with 12 titles to their name. Evolution to a professional league In 2010, during the annual draw for the Sultan Qaboos Cup, Sultan Qaboos bin Said, Sultan of Oman, granted the Oman Football Association, OFA an annual 2.6 million Omani Rial, rial (approximately 6.7 million US Dollars, dollars) till the year 2015 to further boost the development of the league. Dhofar S
The Dhofar Governorate () is the largest of the 11 governorates in the Sultanate of Oman in terms of area. Al Suwaiq () is a coastal wilayah (Provinces of Oman, province) in Al Batinah North Governorate, in northeastern Oman. Sur, Oman
Sur () is the capital city of Ash Sharqiyah South Governorate, and the former capital of Ash Sharqiyah Region in northeastern Oman, on the coast of the Gulf of Oman. Al-Oruba Sports Club was a Qatari football club. The football club merged with Al-Nasour to form a new football club named Al-Esteqlal, now known as Qatar SC.
