The 76th season of the Campeonato Gaúcho kicked off on February 2, 1996 and ended on June 30, 1996. Twenty-eight teams participated. Holders Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense, Grêmio beat Esporte Clube Juventude, Juventude in the finals and won their 31st title. Grêmio Esportivo Pratense, Pratense and Sport Club Rio Grande, Rio Grande were relegated. Participating teams System The championship would have five stages: * Division A: The 14 clubs were divided into two groups of seven. In the first round, teams from one group play against teams from the other group once. In the second round, the teams from each group played in single round-robin format against the others in their group. The Campeonato Gaúcho (English: Gaúcho Championship), officially named as Campeonato Gaúcho de Futebol Série A and commonly known as the Gauchão or the Gauchão Ipiranga (company), Ipiranga for sponsorship reasons, is the top-flight professional State football leagues in Brazil, state football league in the Brazilian States of Brazil, state of Rio Grande do Sul. It is run by the Federação Gaúcha de Futebol, Rio Grande do Sul Football Federation (FGF). Farroupilha is a city in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in the Serra Gaúcha between the cities of Bento Gonçalves, Rio Grande do Sul, Bento Gonçalves and Caxias do Sul. Carazinho is a city located 246 km from Porto Alegre, in the northwest portion of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Carazinho was founded on 1931 and as of 2020 has a population of 62,265.
