The Scottish Football League Second Division was the third tier of the Scottish football league system between 1975 and 2013. History The Second Division was created in 1975, as part of a wider reconstruction of the Scottish Football League (SFL). Prior to 1975, the SFL had been split into two divisions (Division One and Division Two). The effect of the reconstruction was to split these two divisions into three, with the top flight named the Scottish Football League Premier Division, Premier Division, second tier the Scottish Football League First Division, First Division, and a new third tier was created known as the Second Division. A fourth tier, known as the Scottish Football League Third Division, Third Division, was created in 1994. Stenhousemuir (; ) is a town in the Central Lowlands of Scotland. It lies within the Falkirk council area of Scotland. The town is north-northwest of Falkirk and directly adjoins to Larbert in the west, where the nearest rail access is located. The villages of Carron and Carronshore adjoin Stenhousemuir to the east but to a lesser extent. Historically, Stenhousemuir lies with the historic county of Stirlingshire. At the 2001 census it showed that it had a resident population of 10,351 but according to a 2009 estimate this was revised to around 10,190 residents. The combined population of the four localities in 2011 was 24,722, representing about 15% of the Falkirk council area total. 1996–97 Scottish Third Division
The 1996–97 Scottish Football League Third Division was the 3rd season in the format of ten teams in the fourth-tier of Scottish football. The season started on 17 August 1996 and ended on 10 May 1997. Inverness Caledonian Thistle finished top and were promoted alongside runners-up Forfar Athletic. Arbroath finished bottom. Teams for 1996–97 Livingston as champions of the previous season were directly promoted to the 1996–97 Scottish Second Division alongside runners-up Brechin City, both spending only one season in the bottom tier of the Scottish Football League. They were replaced by Forfar Athletic and Montrose who finished second bottom and bottom of the 1994–95 Scottish Second Division respectively and relegated straight back down to the Third Division after only a year in the Second Division. The 1995–96 season was the 99th season of competitive football in Scotland. Scottish Premier Division Summary Rangers won the Premier Division with a record 87 points, finishing four ahead of rivals Celtic. Aberdeen were third with 55 points (on goal difference). Falkirk were relegated after finishing bottom. Partick Thistle were relegated via the play-offs, losing 3–2 on aggregate to Dundee United, who returned to the Premier Division at the first attempt. This was the only occasion on which this short-lived play-off system relegated a team from the Premier Division. Rangers qualified for the European Cup, with Celtic and Aberdeen making it into the UEFA Cup. All three clubs entered at the qualifying round stage.
