1991 NCAA Division I-A Football Season
The 1991 NCAA Division I-A football season was the main college football season sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The season began on August 28, 1991, and ended on January 1, 1992. For the second consecutive season, there was a split national championship. Both the Miami Hurricanes and the Washington Huskies finished the season undefeated (12–0) and with the top ranking in a nationally recognized poll. Under the conference-bowl selection alignments of the time, the Hurricanes and Huskies could not meet in a decisive title game because Washington was slotted into the Rose Bowl as the Pac-10 champions, and the other spot in the Rose Bowl was automatically given to the Big Ten champions (in 1991, that was Michigan). 1991 Florida State Seminoles Football Team
The 1991 Florida State Seminoles football team represented Florida State University as an independent during the 1991 NCAA Division I-A football season. Led by 16th-year head coach Bobby Bowden, the Seminoles compiled a record of 11–2 with win in the Cotton Bowl Classic over Texas A&M. Florida State played home games at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida. Florida State finished the season ranked No. 4 in both polls. TheSeminoles started the season ranked atop of the polls and stayed at No.1 until losing to the No. 2 Miami Hurricanes on November 16, in a game known as Wide Right I. Wide Right I is the colloquial name for a 1991 college football game between the Miami Hurricanes and Florida State Seminoles. The game is one of the most significant in the history of the Florida State–Miami football rivalry, and its name is a reference to its dramatic ending: with 29 seconds remaining, Florida State kicker Gerry Thomas missed a 34-yard potential game-winning field goal "wide to the right." It was the 26th meeting between the first- and second-ranked teams in the AP Poll and only the second between top-ranked teams from the same state (the other being the 1968 Purdue– Notre Dame game).
