1990–91 Orlando Magic Season
The 1990–91 NBA season was the second season for the Orlando Magic in the National Basketball Association. After finishing with an 18–64 record in their inaugural season, the Magic received the fourth overall pick in the 1990 NBA draft, and selected small forward Dennis Scott out of Georgia Tech University. Also, after playing in the Central Division in the Eastern Conference the previous year, the Magic would move into the Western Conference, and settle into the Midwest Division. The Magic continued to struggle in their second season losing their first six games of the regular season. After a three-game winning streak, the team lost 16 of their next 18 games, which included seven and eight-game losing streaks. Matt Guokas
Matthew George Guokas Jr. ( ; born February 25, 1944) is an American former professional basketball player and coach. His father, Matt Guokas Sr., Matt Sr. and uncle, Al Guokas, Al, have also played in the NBA. NBA Most Improved Player
The NBA's Most Improved Player (MIP) is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) award given to the player who has shown the most progress during the regular season compared to previous seasons. The winner is selected by a panel of sportswriters throughout the United States and Canada, each of whom casts a vote for first, second and third place selections. Each first-place vote is worth five points; each second-place vote is worth three points, and each third-place vote is worth one point. The player with the highest point total, regardless of the number of first-place votes, wins the award. The criteria for selecting the most improved player was initially open-ended, but the NBA clarified in later years that it was intended for an up-and-coming player who improved dramatically and not a player who made a comeback, distinguishing it from the defunct NBA Comeback Player of the Year Award. 1990–91 Boston Celtics Season
The 1990–91 NBA season was the 45th season for the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association. During the off-season, the Celtics hired Chris Ford as their new head coach. After playing in Italy the previous season, former Celtics guard Brian Shaw would return to the team after a one-year absence. After failing to advance past the first round in the two previous seasons, it appeared going into the 1990–91 season that the Celtics were fading as NBA title contenders. However, the Celtics burst to a 29–5 start reminiscent of their title years of the 1980s, and once again established themselves as contenders, holding a 35–12 record at the All-Star break. Beginning in January, Larry Bird began to miss significant playing time due to back injuries (Bird would miss 22 regular season games) and the team struggled in his absence. 1990–91 Atlanta Hawks Season
The 1990–91 NBA season was the Hawks' 42nd season in the National Basketball Association, and 23rd season in Atlanta. During the off-season, the Hawks signed free agent All-Star guard Sidney Moncrief, who came out of his retirement. Under new head coach Bob Weiss, the Hawks won their first three games. However, after a 4–1 start, they lost nine consecutive games in November, but went on to win 20 of their next 25 games including a 7-game winning streak, and held a 26–21 record at the All-Star break. The Hawks finished fourth in the Central Division with a 43–39 record. Brian Alfred Hill (born September 19, 1947) is an American former professional basketball coach. Early life Born in East Orange, New Jersey, Hill graduated from Our Lady of the Valley High School in Orange, New Jersey in 1965 and John F. Kennedy College in Nebraska in 1969 with a degree in physical education. Hill was a three-year starter on the Kennedy basketball team. John Gabriel is an American basketball executive who serves as the executive advisor for the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association. He is known for his time as general manager with the Magic, who reached the NBA Playoffs five times during his tenure. 1990–91 Denver Nuggets Season
The 1990–91 NBA season was the Nuggets' 15th season in the National Basketball Association, and 24th season as a franchise. Bernie Bickerstaff took over as General Manager and decided it was time to rebuild the Nuggets. At the time, the club had the oldest team in the league. The Nuggets would make radical changes trading off stars for draft picks. The team selected LSU guard Chris Jackson with the third overall pick in the 1990 NBA draft, while acquiring Orlando Woolridge from the Los Angeles Lakers during the off-season. Under new head coach Paul Westhead, the Nuggets got off to a bad start losing their first seven games. Sam Vincent (basketball)
James Samuel Vincent (born May 18, 1963) is an American former professional basketball player and coach. He is the current coach of MBB of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). Vincent was Mr. Basketball of Michigan in 1981, while playing with Michigan State, and turned professional after four years of college basketball. He became an NBA champion in 1986 with the Boston Celtics. Vincent began a coaching career in Europe after his retirement. Jeff Turner
Jeffrey Steven Turner (born April 9, 1962) is an American former professional basketball player and broadcasting announcer. Turner played ten NBA seasons (1984–1987; 1989–1996), spending time with the New Jersey Nets as well as the Orlando Magic. He ended his NBA career with 3,697 career points. Turner was a 6' 9" forward/ center. After his career ended he spent nine years as a radio color commentator for the Magic. Jerry "Ice" Reynolds (born December 23, 1962) is an American former professional basketball player who was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round (22nd pick overall) of the 1985 NBA draft. A 6'8" guard-forward from Louisiana State University (LSU), Reynolds played in eight NBA seasons from 1985 to 1992 until 1995–96 NBA season, 1995–96. Otis Fitzgerald Smith (born January 30, 1964) is an American former professional basketball player who played six seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Jacksonville Dolphins. Personal life Smith was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida and was a star athlete at Forrest High School, graduating in 1982. Smith is married to Shanta "Tae" Smith. Smith has four children Chris, Otis II, Kamara & Alex.
