1989–90 Eastern Counties Football League
The 1989–90 season was the 48th in the history of Eastern Counties Football League a football competition in England. Sudbury Town were champions for the second time in a row, winning their seventh Eastern Counties Football League title and were promoted to the Southern Football League for the first time in their history. The Eastern Counties Football League, currently known as the Thurlow Nunn League for sponsorship purposes, is an English football league at levels 9 and 10 of the English football league system. It currently contains clubs from Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, eastern Hertfordshire, southern Lincolnshire, and north and east London. The league is a feeder to Division One North of the Isthmian League, but may also see sides promoted to the Northern Premier League Midlands Division. Soham ( ) is a town and civil parish in the district of East Cambridgeshire, in Cambridgeshire, England, just off the A142 between Ely and Newmarket. Its population was 12,336 at the 2021 census. History Archaeology The region between Devil's Dyke and the line between Littleport and Shippea Hill shows a remarkable amount of archaeological findings of the Stone Age, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. A couple of hoards of bronze objects were found in the area of Soham, including one with swords and spearheads of the later Bronze Age as well as a gold torc, retrieved in 1938. A large Anglo-Saxon settlement was discovered on land between Brook Street and Fordham Road, next to Roman remains in the old Fisky's Hill area and former allotment site in 2013 and onwards. The Essex and Suffolk Border Football League is a football competition in England. The league has a total of four divisions headed by the Premier Division which sits at step 7 (or level 11) of the National League System. The 1990–91 Southern Football League season was the 88th in the history of the league, an English football competition. Farnborough Town won the Premier Division and earned promotion to the Football Conference, having been relegated from the Conference the year before. Weymouth, who finished bottom of the Premier Division, were relegated to the Southern Division, whilst Rushden Town, despite finishing fourteenth, were relegated to the Midland Division as their ground did not meet the Premier Division criteria. The champions of the Midland and Southern divisions both failed to win promotion, meaning that only the second-placed clubs, Corby Town and Trowbridge Town were promoted.
