1988–89 San Antonio Spurs Season
The 1988–89 NBA season was the 13th season for the San Antonio Spurs in the National Basketball Association, and their 22nd season as a franchise. The Spurs had the tenth overall pick in the 1988 NBA draft, and selected shooting guard Willie Anderson from the University of Georgia. The team also acquired shooting guard, and second-round draft pick Vernon Maxwell out of the University of Florida from the Denver Nuggets, and hired Larry Brown as their new head coach. The Spurs struggled all season long, posting an 8-game losing streak in December, a 7-game losing streak in January, holding a 13–33 record at the All-Star break, then posting a 13-game losing streak between February and March, and a 9-game losing streak to end the regular season, finishing in fifth place in the Midwest Division with an awful 21–61 record, and missing the NBA playoffs. Larry Brown (basketball)
Lawrence Harvey Brown (born September 14, 1940) is an American basketball coach and former player who last served as an assistant coach for the Memphis Tigers men's basketball, Memphis Tigers. Brown is the only coach in basketball history to win both an National Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA 1988 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, national championship (Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball, Kansas Jayhawks, 1988) and an 2004 NBA Finals, NBA title (Detroit Pistons, 2004). He has a 1,275–965 lifetime professional coaching record in the American Basketball Association (ABA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) and is the only coach in NBA history to lead eight teams (differing franchises) to the playoffs. 1988–89 Denver Nuggets Season
The 1988–89 NBA season was the 13th season for the Denver Nuggets in the National Basketball Association, and their 22nd season as a franchise. During the off-season, the team signed free agent All-Star guard Walter Davis. The Nuggets got off to an 11–4 start to the regular season, but played below .500 basketball afterwards, as Bill Hanzlik only played just 41 games due to a back injury. At mid-season, the team traded Jay Vincent and Calvin Natt to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Dave Greenwood and Darwin Cook, and held a 25–23 record at the All-Star break. Barry Sumpter (born November 11, 1965, in Brooklyn, Illinois) is a retired American professional basketball player A 6'11" forward-center, Sumpter attended Lovejoy high school where he excelled at basketball. Shelton Jones
Shelton Jones (born April 4, 1966) is an American former professional basketball player who played collegiately at St. John's University. He was selected by the San Antonio Spurs in the second round (27th pick overall) of the 1988 NBA draft. Shelton played only one year in the NBA, during the 1988–89 season. He split the year between the Spurs, the Golden State Warriors, and the Philadelphia 76ers, for whom he also appeared in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, finishing in 4th place after advancing to the semi-finals. 1989–90 Philadelphia 76ers Season
The 1989–90 NBA season was the 76ers 41st season in the National Basketball Association, and 27th season in Philadelphia. During the off-season, the Sixers acquired Rick Mahorn from the expansion Minnesota Timberwolves, who selected him in the 1989 NBA expansion draft. Mahorn, who won a championship with the Detroit Pistons last year, joined Charles Barkley and Mike Gminski to form a formidable front court. The team also acquired Johnny Dawkins from the San Antonio Spurs, who teamed with second-year star Hersey Hawkins in the backcourt. After a mediocre 18–16 start to the season, the Sixers would win twelve consecutive games, then hold a 30–18 record at the All-Star break, and post an 8-game winning streak near the end of the season. The 1989–90 NBA season was the Bucks' 22nd season in the National Basketball Association. For the first time since the 1978–79 season, Sidney Moncrief was not on the team's opening day roster. During the off-season, the Bucks acquired All-Star guard Alvin Robertson and Greg Anderson from the San Antonio Spurs. Early into the season, the Bucks defeated the Seattle SuperSonics in a quintuple-overtime game on November 9, 155–154 at the Bradley Center. The team held a 27–22 record at the All-Star break. Frank Brickowski
Francis Anthony Brickowski (born August 14, 1959) is an American former professional basketball player, who started his career playing 3 seasons overseas before playing 13 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). College and overseas career Born in Bayville, New York, Brickowski played college basketball for four years as a power forward/ center for Penn State. He won the John Lawther Award in 1980 as Penn State's MVP. Brickowski was then selected with the 11th pick of the third round of the 1981 NBA draft by the New York Knicks. The Knicks considered him not quite ready for the NBA, so he began his professional basketball career in Italy. Greg Anderson (basketball)
Gregory Wayne "Cadillac" Anderson (born June 22, 1964) is an American former professional basketball player. College career He attended and played collegiate basketball at the University of Houston, where he was one of the last original members of the famed Phi Slama Jama “fraternity”. He competed in the 1984 Final Four in Seattle while at Houston. Professional career A 6'10" power forward/ center, Anderson was selected 23rd overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the 1987 NBA draft. Johnny Dawkins
Johnny Earl Dawkins Jr. (born September 28, 1963) is an American basketball coach and former player who is the head coach for the UCF men's basketball team. From 2008 to 2016, he was the head coach of Stanford. He was a two-time All-American and national player of the year as a senior in 1986 while at Duke from 1982 to 1986. Dawkins subsequently played nine seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the San Antonio Spurs (1986–1989), Philadelphia 76ers (1989–1994), and Detroit Pistons (1994–1995). NBA All-Defensive Team
The NBA All-Defensive Team is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) honor given since the 1968–69 NBA season to the best defensive players during the regular season. The All-Defensive Team is generally composed of ten players in two five-man lineups, a first and a second team. Voting is conducted by a panel of 123 writers and broadcasters. Alvin Robertson
Alvin Cyrrale Robertson (born July 22, 1962) is an American former professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1984 to 1993, and for one final season in 1995–96. Robertson holds the record for the most steals per game played, averaging 2.71 steals per game for his career and is the only player to ever have a season of 300 or more steals which he accomplished in the 1985–86 season. NBA Rookie Of The Year
The National Basketball Association's Rookie of the Year is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) award given to the top rookie(s) of the regular season.
