1988–89 Liga Leumit
The 1988–89 Liga Leumit season began in September 1988 and ended in June 1989. After the first two rounds of matches (26 matches) the league split into two groups; a ''Championship group'' of six clubs and a ''Relegation group'' of eight clubs, who played the other clubs in their group once more. Maccabi Haifa F.C., Maccabi Haifa won their third title, whilst Hapoel Tiberias F.C., Hapoel Tiberias, Hapoel Tzafririm Holon F.C., Tzafririm Holon and Hapoel Tel Aviv F.C., Hapoel Tel Aviv (a year after winning the title) were all relegated. Benny Tabak of Maccabi Tel Aviv F.C., Maccabi Tel Aviv was the league's top scorer with 18 goals. Israeli Premier League
The Israeli Premier League (, Ligat HaAl, ) is a professional association football league in Israel and the highest level of the Israeli football league system. The league is contested by 14 clubs, and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with its second division Liga Leumit. Seasons run from August to May, with teams playing between 33 and 36 matches each, totalling 240 matches in every season. The competition formed in 1999 following the decision of the Israel Football Association to form a new league. It is also ranked 15th in the UEFA coefficients of leagues based on performances in European competitions over the last five years. Since 1932, a total of 15 clubs have been crowned champions of the Israeli Football League. The 1989–90 Liga Artzit season in Israel saw Tzafririm Holon and Hapoel Tel Aviv promoted to Liga Leumit. At the other end of the table, Hapoel Rishon LeZion and Hapoel Lod were automatically relegated to Liga Alef, whilst Maccabi Tamra went down after losing the promotion-relegation play-offs. Maccabi Yavne's Benny Tabak was the league's top scorer with 19 goals.
