1987–88 England Hockey League Season
The 1987–88 English Hockey League season took place from September 1987 until May 1988. The season culminated in the National Inter League Championship for men which brought together the winners of their respective regions. The championship was won by Southgate. The Men's Hockey Association Cup was won by Southgate and the Women's Cup (National Club Championship finals) was won by Ealing. Men's England Hockey League
The Men's England Hockey League is a field hockey league organised by England Hockey that features men's teams from England and Wales. Format Regular season There are 62 teams in the league, the top tier consists of a Premier Division of twelve teams. Below this is tier two, which consists of two ten-team Division One regional teams (North and South). The third tier consists of three regional conferences North, West, and East, all consisting of ten teams. The teams play each other home and away during an 18 week season from September to April. The league has a winter break between December and February. The winners of the Premier Division regular season automatically qualify to play in the Euro Hockey League. St Albans Hockey Club is a field hockey club that is based at Oaklands College in Hatfield Road, St Albans, Hertfordshire. The club was founded in 1898. The club runs twelve men's teams with the first XI playing in the Men's England Hockey League Midlands Conference and eight women's teams with the first XI playing in the Women's England Hockey League Midlands Conference. Bowdon Hockey Club is a field hockey club based in Bowdon, Greater Manchester, England. The hockey club was established in 1886 but the Bowdon Club which hosts the team was formed in 1856. Coundon, Coventry
Coundon is a predominantly residential suburb in north-west Coventry, in the county of the West Midlands (county), West Midlands, England. Along with the neighbouring Keresley, Coundon was originally a village in the Warwickshire countryside. By the 1930s it had been incorporated into the city of Coventry after mass housebuilding took place to accommodate the city's growing population. Martyn Andrew Grimley (born 24 February 1963) is a British former field hockey player who competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics, where he won a gold medal. Biography Grimley was born in Halifax, England and played club hockey for Brooklands Hockey Club in the Men's England Hockey League and represented Cheshire at county level. He was selected for the England U16 and U21 squads and was shortlisted for the 1984 Summer Olympics but failed to make the final cut before gaining a position at Banbury School in Oxfordshire as a Physical Education teacher in September 1985, following his training at Crewe and Alsager College. Nick Thompson (field Hockey)
Nicholas Thompson (born 21 September 1967) is a British former field hockey player who competed in the 1996 Summer Olympics. He gained 196 caps and scored 58 goals. Biography Thompson, born in Hackney, only picked up a hockey stick in 1981 aged 14 but by 1983 was representing the England U16 team. Thompson played club hockey for Old Loughtonians Hockey Club in the Men's England Hockey League from 1986 and was involved in the Seoul 1988 Olympic training squad. David Hacker
David John Hacker (born 25 March 1964) is a British former field hockey player who competed in the 2000 Summer Olympics. Biography Hacker was born in Hampshire but gained qualification for Wales by virtue of his mother's Welsh ancestry. He played his club hockey for Hounslow in the Men's England Hockey League and by 1987 he was representing Wales at international level. He helped Hounslow win the Hockey Association Cup during the 1988–89 England Hockey League season. He made his Great Britain debut during the June 1990 BMW Trophy tournament in Amsterdam and in June 1991 became Wales' all-time record scorer. Jon Potter
Jonathan Nicholas Mark Potter (born 19 November 1963) is a former field hockey player who was a member of the gold-winning Great Britain squad at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. After his playing career he became the managing director of House of Suntory and Maison Courvoisier at Suntory Global Spirits. Biography Potter was born in Paddington, Greater London, in an Anglo-Indian family and brought up in Slough, England. He attended Burnham Grammar School from 1976 to 1982, and represented England Schoolboys at field hockey. Veryan Pappin
Veryan Guy Henry Pappin (born 19 May 1958) is an English born former field hockey player who represented Scotland and was a member of the gold medal-winning Great Britain squad at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Biography Pappin was born in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire but represented Scotland. He grew up on a farm in Moretonhampstead and was educated at Wolborough Hill School, Newton Abbot, Kelly College and the University of Exeter. Robert Clift
Robert John Clift (born 1 August 1962) is a British former field hockey player. He was a member of the Great Britain squad in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul where they won a gold medal. Biography Clift was born in Newport, Wales, and was educated at Bablake School and the University of Nottingham. His preferred position was inside left and in November 1982 he received his first England call up while studying at Nottingham and playing for Nottingham Hockey Club. James Duthie (field Hockey)
James Livingstone Duthie (born 27 October 1957) is a former field hockey player, who won the bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Biography Duthie was born in Glasgow but was educated at Bishop's Stortford College and lived in Bishop's Stortford while the captain of the England U21 team in 1978. He played club hockey for Southgate in the Men's England Hockey League and in July 1978 he was selected for the England squad. He also appeared for the King's Lynn based Pelicans during the indoor season.
