The 1987–88 NHL season, 1987–88 Detroit Red Wings season was the Red Wings' Detroit Red Wings seasons, 56th season (sports), season, the franchise's 62nd. Coached by Jacques Demers, the team compiled a record of 41–28–11 for 93 points, to finish first place in the Norris Division at the end of the regular season for the first time since 1965, and earned their first winning season since 1972–73 Detroit Red Wings season, 1973. Luckily for them, the division was weak that year; they were the only team in their division to have a winning record that season. In the playoffs, they won their Norris Division Semifinal series 4–2 over the Toronto Maple Leafs, and they followed that with a 5-game win over the St. Louis Blues in the Norris Division Final. The 1987–88 Winnipeg Jets season was the 16th season of the Winnipeg Jets, their ninth season in the National Hockey League. The Jets placed third in the Smythe to qualify for the playoffs. The Jets lost to the Edmonton Oilers in the first round. Offseason On June 5, 1987, the Jets traded away Perry Turnbull to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a fifth round draft pick in the 1987 NHL entry draft. Turnbull had an injury plagued 1986–87 season, scoring a goal and six points in 26 games. From 1984 to 1986, he had back-to-back 20+ goal seasons in his first two years with Winnipeg. Winnipeg Jets (1972–1996)
The Winnipeg Jets were a professional ice hockey team based in Winnipeg. They began play in the World Hockey Association (WHA) in 1972. The club joined the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1979 after the NHL merged with the WHA. Due to mounting financial troubles, in 1996 the franchise moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and became the Phoenix Coyotes (the former name of the now inactive Arizona Coyotes). The team played their home games at Winnipeg Arena. The Jets' WHA years were successful, with the team making the playoffs every year except for the 1974–75 season. The 1987–88 Toronto Maple Leafs season saw the Maple Leafs finish in fourth place in the Norris Division with a record of 21 wins, 49 losses, and 10 ties for 52 points.
