1987 Australian Open – Women's Singles
Hana Mandlíková defeated defending champion Martina Navratilova in the final, 7–5, 7–6(7–1) to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1987 Australian Open. It was her second Australian Open title and fourth and last major singles title. There was no Australian Open in 1986, due to the administrative changes to make the tournament the opening major of the year (as it had been before 1977). The 1987 championship therefore followed the 1985 tournament, held over a year earlier. This was the last edition of the tournament to be held on grass courts, as it would switch to hardcourts the following year. Hana Mandlíková
Hana Mandlíková (born 19 February 1962) is a Czech–Australian former professional tennis player. She was ranked world No. 3 in women's singles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) in the mid-1980s. Mandíková won 27 WTA Tour-level singles titles, including four majors: the 1980 Australian Open, 1981 French Open, 1985 US Open and 1987 Australian Open. She was the runner-up at a further four singles majors – twice at Wimbledon and twice at the US Open. She also won 19 career doubles titles, including a major in women's doubles at the 1989 US Open partnering Martina Navratilova. Competing for Czechoslovakia and later Australia, Mandlíková was one of the brightest stars of her generation and is considered one of the greatest female players of the Open Era. Carling Kathrin Bassett-Seguso (born 9 October 1967) is a former Canadian professional tennis player, fashion model and actress. Bassett is the daughter of John F. Bassett and Susan Carling, and the granddaughter of media baron John W. H. Bassett and politician and brewery executive John Carling. She was inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. Tennis career In 1981, Bassett won the Canadian junior indoor tennis title. In 1982, she was ranked No. 2 junior player in the world, after winning events in Tokyo and Taipei. Elizabeth Minter
Elizabeth Minter (born 23 August 1965) is an Australian former professional tennis player. She was born on 23 August 1965 in Australia and played on the WTA tour from 1980 to 1990. She now helps train young children. Tennis career In 1983 Minter won the 1983 US Open Junior Girls' Singles.
