Football League (Greece)
The Football League () was the second highest professional football league in Greece since its inception in 1962 as ''Beta Ethniki'' and until 2019. It then served as a third tier after the creation of the Super League 2 as the new second tier and it was eventually abolished in 2021 when the 2021–22 Super League 2 went from a 12 team to a 36 team league, absorbing most of the clubs from the Football League. 1987–88 Gamma Ethniki
The 1987–88 Gamma Ethniki was the fifth season since the official establishment of the third tier of Greek football in 1983. Atromitos and Makedonikos were crowned champions in ''Southern'' and ''Northern'' Group respectively, thus winning promotion to Beta Ethniki. Rethymniakos and Niki Volos also won promotion as a runners-up of the groups. Panargiakos, Kerkyra, Rodos, Ergotelis, Aiolikos Aris Nikaia, Achaiki, Messiniakos, Agrotikos Asteras, Lamia, Panetolikos, Polykastro, Olympiakos Chalkida, Ethnikos Alexandroupoli, Anagennisi Neapoli, Pandramaikos, Anagennisi Kolindros, Alexandreia and Nestos Chrysoupoli were relegated to Delta Ethniki. The 1987–88 Alpha Ethniki was the 52nd season of the highest football league of Greece. The season began on 6 September 1987 and ended on 15 May 1988. AEL won their first Greek title in its history. The season was notable as the only season where neither Panathinaikos or Olympiacos, by far the most successful and dominant clubs, finished in the top four. Trikala () is a city in northwestern Thessaly, Greece, and the capital of the Trikala regional unit. The city straddles the Lithaios river, which is a tributary of Pineios. Panachaiki G.E. (Greek: Παναχαϊκή Γυμναστική Ένωση, ''Panachaiki Gymnastiki Enosi'', "Pan- Achaean Gymnastic Union") is a Greek multi-sport club based in the city of Patras, Greece. The history of Panachaiki began in 1891, when Panachaikos Gymnastikos Syllogos (Pan-Achaean Gymnastic Club) was founded. In 1894, a rival sports club, Gymnastiki Eteria Patron (Gymnastic Company of Patras), was founded in Patras by former Panachaikos' members. It was only in 1923 that the two clubs agreed to merge, forming Panachaiki Gymnastiki Enosi. Throughout a history of over 120 years, Panachaiki's athletes have won several Olympic medals.
