1986–87 Alabama Crimson Tide Men's Basketball Team
The 1986–87 Alabama Crimson Tide men's basketball team represented the University of Alabama in the 1986–87 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team's head coach was Wimp Sanderson, who was in his seventh season at Alabama. The team played their home games at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. They finished the season with a school-record 28 wins at 28–5 and won the Southeastern Conference regular season title with a 16–2 conference record. The 16 wins in conference were also a school record. The team lost forward Buck Johnson to graduation, but signed freshman forward Keith Askins from Athens High School in Athens, Alabama. The Tide also won the 1987 SEC men's basketball tournament, beating LSU in the final and earning an automatic bid to the 1987 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. Wimp Sanderson
Winfrey "Wimp" Sanderson (born August 8, 1937) is an American former college basketball coach. He coached at the University of Alabama from 1980 to 1992 followed by stint at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock from 1994 to 1999. Sanderson was born in Florence, Alabama. He attended Coffee High School and graduated from Florence State College, in 1959. In 1960 he became a graduate assistant under Hayden Riley at Alabama, and in 1961 he was made a full-time assistant. Sanderson served in this capacity for 20 years under both Riley and C. M. Newton, eventually becoming Newton's top assistant. When Newton resigned to become assistant commissioner of the Southeastern Conference, Sanderson was named his successor. In 12 years as head coach his teams averaged 21.8 wins a year, with a 267–119 record, and they won 5 SEC tournaments. They played in one NIT and ten NCAA tournaments making the Sweet 16 six times. The 1986–87 Penn Quakers men's basketball team represented the University of Pennsylvania during the 1986–87 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Quakers, led by 2nd-year head coach Tom Schneider, played their home games at The Palestra as members of the Ivy League. Stegeman Coliseum
Stegeman Coliseum, formerly known as Georgia Coliseum, is a 10,523-seat multi-purpose arena in Athens, Georgia, United States. The arena opened in 1964 in honor of Herman Stegeman. It is home to the University of Georgia Bulldogs basketball and gymnastics teams. It was also the venue of the rhythmic gymnastics and preliminary indoor volleyball matches during the 1996 Summer Olympics, as well as the 1989, 1995, and 2008 NCAA gymnastics championships. As a multi-purpose facility, the Coliseum also hosted a variety of other kinds of events, including many large indoor rock concerts during its early history, as well as the university's Graduate School commencement exercises. The 1986–87 Georgia Bulldogs basketball team represented the University of Georgia as a member of the Southeastern Conference during the 1986–87 NCAA men's basketball season. The team was led by head coach Hugh Durham, and played their home games at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, Georgia. The Bulldogs finished third in the SEC regular season standings, and received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as No. 8 seed in the West region. Meadowlands Arena (formerly Brendan Byrne Arena, Continental Airlines Arena and Izod Center) is a closed indoor sports and concert venue located in the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey, United States.
