1985 New Year Honours
The New Year Honours 1985 were appointments by most of the Commonwealth realms of Queen Elizabeth II to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of those countries, and honorary ones to citizens of other countries. Commonwealth Realm
A Commonwealth realm is a sovereign state in the Commonwealth of Nations that has the same constitutional monarch and head of state as the other realms. The current monarch is King Charles III. Except for the United Kingdom, in each of the realms the monarch is represented by a governor-general. Sir Diarmuid Downs (23 April 1922 – 12 February 2014) was a British automotive engineer. Early life Downs was born in 1922 in London, where his father ran a small engineering business manufacturing equipment for the oil industry. Downs was educated at Gunnersbury Catholic Grammar School and the Regent Street Polytechnic, London. He then studied at Northampton Engineering College, London, where he graduated with First Class honours in 1942. Arthur Paul Dean, Baron Dean of Harptree, PC (14 September 1924 – 1 April 2009) was a British politician who held a seat in the House of Commons from 1964 until 1992. He was a member of the Conservative Party. The title and job role of His Majesty's Chief Inspector of Fire and Rescue Services in England, Scotland and Wales is combined with that known as Fire and Rescue Adviser (or Government Fire and Rescue Adviser) appointed by the devolved and national governments of the United Kingdom. Sir John Michael Carlisle (born 16 December 1929) is a British marine engineer. Early life and education Carlisle was born in Sheffield, the son of John Hugh Carlisle and Lilian Amy Smith. He was educated at King Edward VII Schoolphoto, and then the University of Sheffield where he studied mechanical engineering.
