1984–85 Montreal Canadiens Season
The 1984–85 Montreal Canadiens season was the team's 76th season of play. Offseason In July 1984, Patrick Roy signed his first NHL contract with the Montreal Canadiens. There was a clause that if he played in at least 40 games, he would receive a $5,000 bonus. Regular season After scoring only two goals in 19 games and unhappy with the amount of ice time he was receiving, Guy Lafleur decided to retire. On October 24, 1984, Patrick Roy was sent down to the Granby Bisons without having played a regular season game. On February 23, 1985, at the beginning of the third period, Patrick Roy made his NHL debut. Roy replaced Doug Soetaert and earned the first win of his career in a 6–4 win over the Winnipeg Jets. It was his only game this season but he would play 1,275 more games until 2003. Granby Bisons
The Granby Bisons were a Canadian junior ice hockey team based in Granby, Quebec, and played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). The team was founded in 1981 after they moved from Sorel-Tracy, Quebec, where they had previously been known as the Sorel Éperviers. The Bisons played at Arena Leonard Grondin in Granby. In 1995 the team was renamed the Granby Prédateurs. As of 2019, the team is known as the Cape Breton Eagles. Notable former Bisons include Patrick Roy, Pierre Turgeon. Stéphane Richer (ice Hockey Forward)
Stéphane Joseph Jean-Jacques Richer (; born June 7, 1966) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey right winger. Playing career Richer was drafted 29th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. He played in 1,054 career NHL games, scoring 421 goals and 398 assists for 819 points. Richer won the Calder Cup in 1985. He won the Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens in 1986; Richer scored four goals and one assist in the 16 games in which he participated that playoff season. Montreal traded Stephane Richer and Tom Chorske to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Kirk Muller and Roland Melanson on September 20, 1991. Richer won the Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in 1995; Richer scored six goals and 15 assists in the 19 games that he played in during that playoff season. Brantford Alexanders
The Brantford Alexanders were a junior ice hockey team in the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League and Ontario Hockey League from 1978 to 1984. The team was based in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. History The Hamilton Fincups were relocated in 1978 becoming the Brantford Alexanders. The OMJHL junior team took the name of the OHA senior team which had played for two years prior, which in themselves were named for Brantford's most famous former resident, telephone pioneer Alexander Graham Bell. After two years in the OMJHL, the league changed names to the OHL and the Alexanders played four more seasons in Brantford, before moving back to Hamilton as the Steelhawks. Shayne Paul Corson (born August 13, 1966) is a Canadian former professional hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Dallas Stars. Petr Svoboda (born February 14, 1966) is a Czech former professional ice hockey defenceman. He played 17 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Montreal Canadiens, Buffalo Sabres, Philadelphia Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning. He was the first Czech to play over 1,000 games in the NHL. He is currently the director of hockey operations for Lausanne HC. Calder Memorial Trophy
The Calder Memorial Trophy is an annual award given "to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League (NHL)." It is named after Frank Calder, the first president of the NHL. Serving as the NHL's Rookie of the Year award, this version of the trophy has been awarded since its creation for the 1936–37 NHL season.
