The 1984–85 Los Angeles Lakers season was the 39th season of the franchise, 37th in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and 25th in Los Angeles. The Lakers entered the season as runner-ups of the 1984 NBA Finals, where they lost in heartbreaking fashion to the Boston Celtics in seven games, increasing their losing streak to the Celtics in the NBA Finals to 8 consecutive losses. In the playoffs, the Lakers swept the Phoenix Suns in three games in the First Round, then defeated the Portland Trail Blazers in five games in the Semifinals, before defeating the Denver Nuggets in five games in the Conference Finals to advance to the NBA Finals for the fifth time in the 1980s, facing off against the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics in a rematch of last season's NBA Finals. William M. Bertka (born August 8, 1927) is a current basketball consultant/special assistant and a former National Basketball Association (NBA) assistant coach, scout and executive with the Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans Jazz. A pioneering proponent of film study, advance scouting, player development and basketball analytics, Bertka has spent more than 50 years in the NBA and has been a part of 10 NBA championships with the Lakers, including seven as an assistant coach. Charles Goodrich Nevitt (born June 13, 1959) is an American former professional basketball player, known primarily for his great height. The 1984 NBA draft was the 37th annual draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA). It was held at the Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York, on June 19, 1984, before the 1984–85 season. The draft is generally considered to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, in NBA history, with four players who would go on to be Hall of Famers being drafted in the first sixteen picks and five overall. Earl Amasa Jones (born January 13, 1961) is an American former professional basketball player. He was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks. Early years Jones attended Mount Hope High School for three seasons, where he led the school to 63 wins in 72 games and the 1978 West Virginia Class AA championship game, while he averaged 28 points. But he struggled outside of the basketball court and at one point as a junior, missed 63 consecutive days of school.
