1984–85 Hartford Whalers Season
The 1984–85 Hartford Whalers season was the Whalers' sixth season in the National Hockey League. The Whalers failed to qualify for the post-season for the fifth consecutive season. The Whalers finished with a 30–41–9 record, earning 69 points, which was their highest point total since the 1979–80 season. Hartford finished 13 points behind the fourth place Boston Bruins for the final playoff position in the Adams Division. Offseason On May 29, the Whalers acquired defenseman Brad Shaw from the Detroit Red Wings for an eighth round draft pick in the 1984 NHL entry draft. Shaw played with the Ottawa 67's during the 1983–84 season, scoring 12 goals and 78 points in 63 games. Adams Division
The National Hockey League's Adams Division was formed in 1974 as part of the Prince of Wales Conference. The division existed for 19 seasons until 1993. It was named in honour of Charles Francis Adams, the founder of the Boston Bruins. It is the forerunner of the NHL's Northeast Division, which later became the Atlantic Division. Hartford Whalers
The Hartford Whalers were a professional ice hockey team based for most of its 25-year existence in Hartford, Connecticut. The club played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) from 1972 until 1979, and in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1979 to 1997. Originally based in Boston, they were charter members of the WHA, known as the New England Whalers for all seven seasons. After their second season, the team moved southwest to Hartford in April 1974; five years later, the Whalers joined the NHL in the 1979 NHL–WHA merger and were renamed the "Hartford Whalers" because the Boston Bruins did not want to share a geographical market with the team. The 1984 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships (''1984 WJHC'') was the eighth edition of the Ice Hockey World Junior Championship. It was held from December 25, 1983, to January 3, 1984, in Norrköping and Nyköping, Sweden. The Soviet Union won its second consecutive gold medal and sixth overall. The 1983–84 OHL season was the fourth season of the Ontario Hockey League. The Leo Lalonde Memorial Trophy is inaugurated for the overage player of the year. Fifteen teams each played 70 games. Ottawa 67's
The Ottawa 67's are a major junior ice hockey team based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, that plays in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Established during Canada's centennial year of 1967 and named in honour of this, the 67's currently play their home games at TD Place Arena. The 67's are three-time OHL champions, and have played in the Memorial Cup five times, winning in 1984 and as host team in 1999. History The Ontario Hockey Association granted the city of Ottawa an expansion franchise on February 16, 1967. Four months later, the team was given the nickname 67's, in honour of Canada's centennial year. Brad Shaw
Bradley William Shaw (born April 28, 1964) is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach and former player who is the assistant coach for the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected by the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League (NHL) in the fifth round, 86th overall, in the 1982 NHL entry draft. He has played for the Hartford Whalers, Ottawa Senators, Washington Capitals and St. Louis Blues in the NHL. He was a member of the 1989–90 NHL All-Rookie Team and twice won the Eddie Shore Award as the American Hockey League's best defenceman. 1979–80 NHL Season
The 1979–80 NHL season was the 63rd season of the National Hockey League. This season saw the addition of four teams from the disbanded World Hockey Association as expansion franchises. The Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, New England Whalers (later renamed "Hartford Whalers" at the insistence of the Boston Bruins), and Quebec Nordiques joined the NHL, bringing the total to 21 teams. The other two WHA teams ( Birmingham Bulls and Cincinnati Stingers) were paid to fold. The New York Islanders won their first Stanley Cup, defeating the Philadelphia Flyers in six games, in the finals. The season also marked the eighth and final season for the Flames in Atlanta before the franchise relocated to Calgary. The NHL would return to the Georgia capital in 1999 with the Thrashers, but that team would ultimately relocate away from Atlanta as well becoming the second (and current) incarnation of the Winnipeg Jets.
