1984–85 Chicago Black Hawks Season
The 1984–85 Chicago Black Hawks season was the 59th season of the Hawks' existence. Offseason Long-time goalie Tony Esposito retired from the team after a 16-year career in the NHL. Esposito had been with the Black Hawks for 15 of those years, appearing in 873 games, and earning a 418-302-147 record with a 2.93 GAA and 74 shutouts. On June 9, the Black Hawks traded away goaltender Bob Janecyk, their first round, sixth overall pick, as well as their third and fourth round draft picks in the 1984 NHL entry draft to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for the Kings first round, third overall draft pick and their fourth round pick in the draft. By moving up three spots in the draft, the Black Hawks drafted local prospect Ed Olczyk. Bob Janecyk
Robert T. Janecyk (born May 18, 1957) is an American retired ice hockey goaltender who played 110 games in the National Hockey League for the Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Black Hawks between 1984 and 1988. Career Janecyk attended Marist High School and played for Chicago State University in his hometown from 1976 to 1978. He turned professional with the Fort Wayne Komets, then played in the American Hockey League for the New Brunswick Hawks, going 11-2 in the 1982 playoffs as the team captured the AHL's Calder Cup. Janecyk made his NHL debut with the Black Hawks during the 1983–84 season, appearing in eight games. A trade on the day of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft sent Chicago's first, third and fourth-round selections plus Janecyk to the Los Angeles Kings for their first and fourth-round picks. Doug Wilson (ice Hockey)
Douglas Frederick Wilson (born July 5, 1957) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman, who later served as general manager of the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League, and is currently Senior Advisor of Hockey Operations with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He won the 1984 Canada Cup with Team Canada. Playing career After a junior hockey career for the Ottawa 67's in the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League, Wilson was drafted in the first round, sixth overall, in the 1977 NHL Entry Draft. He then played 14 seasons with the Chicago Black Hawks and two years for the San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League. He was the first captain in Sharks history, serving two years before retiring after the 1992–93 season. The 1983–84 Chicago Black Hawks season was the 58th season of operation of the Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League (NHL). Off-season The Black Hawks had a fairly quiet off-season, however, the club did complete a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers, sending defenseman Doug Crossman and their second-round draft pick in the 1984 NHL entry draft to the Flyers in exchange for defenseman Behn Wilson. Wilson had spent his entire five-year career with Philadelphia, and in the 1982–83 season had 8 goals and 32 points in 62 games, as well as 92 penalty minutes. At the 1983 NHL entry draft, Chicago selected defenseman Bruce Cassidy from the Ottawa 67's of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with their first-round draft pick. Atlanta Flames
The Atlanta Flames were a professional ice hockey team based in Atlanta from 1972 until 1980. They played home games in the Omni Coliseum and were members of the West and later Patrick divisions of the National Hockey League (NHL). Along with the New York Islanders, the Flames were created in 1971 as part of the NHL's conflict with the rival World Hockey Association (WHA). The team enjoyed modest success on the ice, qualifying for the playoffs in six of its eight seasons, but failed to win a playoff series and won only two post-season games total. The franchise struggled to draw fans and, after averaging only 10,000 per game by the 1979–80 season was sold and relocated to Alberta to become the Calgary Flames. Lady Byng Trophy
The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, formerly known as the Lady Byng Trophy, is presented each year to the National Hockey League "player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability." The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy has been awarded 90 times to 53 different players since it was first awarded in 1925. The original trophy was donated to the league by Lady Byng of Vimy, then–viceregal consort of Canada. 1983–84 NHL Season
The 1983–84 NHL season was the 67th season of the National Hockey League. The Edmonton Oilers de-throned the four-time defending Stanley Cup champion New York Islanders four games to one in the Cup finals. League business Ownership changes Arthur M. Wirtz, long-time chairman and part-owner of the Chicago Black Hawks, died at the age of 82 on July 21, 1983. His son, Bill, took over ownership of the team. St. Louis Blues owner Ralston Purina announced that it would sell the team to a group led by World Hockey Association (WHA) and Edmonton Oilers founder Bill Hunter, with the intent on relocating the Blues to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Bob MacMillan
Robert Lea MacMillan (born December 3, 1952) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey forward and a former politician who served in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island. During his hockey career, he played two seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA), followed by eleven seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), from 1974–75 until 1984–85. He helped the Calgary Flames reach the NHL playoff semifinals for the first time in 1981. The New Jersey Devils are a professional ice hockey team based in Newark, New Jersey. The Devils compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference (NHL), Eastern Conference. Rich Preston
Richard John "Rich" Preston (born May 22, 1952) is a Canadian ice hockey coach and former forward. He played hockey for the Houston Aeros and Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association and the Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey League. He won the Avco World Trophy in 1975 with Houston and 1979 with Winnipeg, and his play in the 1979 WHA playoffs awarded him the WHA Playoff MVP, the last to be awarded by the league prior to the NHL-WHA merger. Don Dietrich (ice Hockey)
Donald Armond Dietrich (April 5, 1961 – February 16, 2021) was a Canadian ice hockey defenceman who played 28 games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Black Hawks and New Jersey Devils between 1983 and 1986,. He was selected 183rd overall by the Chicago Black Hawks in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. He joined the Hawks for 17 games in 1983–84, recording five assists, but spent most of his time in the Chicago organization in the minor leagues. He was traded to the New Jersey Devils in 1985 along with Rich Preston for Bob MacMillan. He appeared in 11 games with the Devils in 1985–86 before spending four years playing in West Germany.
