1983–84 Arsenal F.C. Season
The 1983–84 season was Arsenal Football Club's 58th consecutive season in the top flight of English football. Arsenal finished sixth in the Football League First Division. Charlie Nicholas was brought to Arsenal from Celtic. However, he did not immediately perform. Paul Mariner was also bought to bolster the club in the latter half of the season. Tony Woodcock remained Arsenal's top scorer. Graham Rix assumed the captaincy from David O'Leary. Arsenal were knocked out of the League Cup at home by Walsall F.C., Walsall. After a run of dismal league results including five losses in six games, manager Terry Neill was sacked on 16 December 1983. He was succeeded by his assistant Don Howe. Paul Mariner
Paul Mariner (22 May 1953 – 9 July 2021) was an English Association football, football player and Coach (sport), coach. A centre forward during his playing days, Mariner began his career with Chorley F.C., Chorley. He became a professional player in 1973 with Plymouth Argyle F.C., Plymouth Argyle, where he scored 61 goals in 155 appearances and is considered to have been one of the club's best ever players. He joined Ipswich Town F.C., Ipswich Town in 1976, where he achieved domestic and European success under the guidance of Bobby Robson. He was called up to play for the England national football team, England national team during his time at Portman Road, and went on to represent his country at the UEFA Euro 1980, 1980 European Championships and the 1982 FIFA World Cup, 1982 World Cup. Stewart Robson
Stewart Ian Robson (born 6 November 1964) is an English former football player and TV and radio football pundit. He played for Arsenal, West Ham United where he was their player of the season in 1988, and Coventry City. After his footballing career ended he took on a role as a TV and radio pundit for Arsenal TV until 2012, ESPN, TalkSPORT and TNT Sports. Tommy Caton
Thomas Stephen Caton (6 October 1962 – 30 April 1993) was an English footballer who played as a centre half for Manchester City, Arsenal, Oxford United and Charlton Athletic. Caton captained both Manchester City and Oxford United and was named as City's Player of the Year in 1982. He made 14 appearances for the England under-21 team. Brian Talbot
Brian Ernest Talbot (born 21 July 1953) is an English former football player and manager. He was capped six times for the England national team. Talbot played in midfield for Ipswich Town, Arsenal, Watford, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, Fulham and Aldershot of the Football League, for non-league club Sudbury Town, and for the Toronto Metros of the North American Soccer League. He then went into management with West Bromwich Albion, Aldershot, Rushden & Diamonds, Oldham Athletic, Oxford United, and two Maltese clubs, Hibernians and Marsaxlokk. Kenny Sansom
Kenneth Graham Sansom (born 26 September 1958) is a former professional footballer who played as a left-back. An England international, he played for clubs such as Crystal Palace, Arsenal, Newcastle United, Coventry City, Queens Park Rangers, Everton and Watford. Colin Hill (footballer)
Colin Frederick Hill (born 12 November 1963) is a Northern Irish former professional footballer who played as a centre-back and right-back. He notably played top flight football for Arsenal, Sheffield United and Leicester City, where he saw time in the Premier League with the latter. He also played in the top divisions of Portugal and Sweden for both Marítimo and Trelleborg as well as in the Football League for Brighton & Hove Albion, Colchester United and Northampton Town. Pat Jennings
Patrick Anthony Jennings (born 12 June 1945) is a Northern Irish former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He is widely recognised as one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of the sport and was nominated for the Ballon d'Or in 1973, 1975 and 1985. He played 119 international matches for Northern Ireland in an international career which lasted for over 22 years.
